David Yates (born November 30, 1963 in Saint Helens , Merseyside , England ) is a British director , screenwriter and film producer . He first gained experience in the TV sector. There he realized, among other things, the multi-award-winning series Murder on page one and the two-part series Sex Traffic, which received eight BAFTA awards . He achieved worldwide fame as the director of the last four films in the Harry Potter series . Since 2016 he has worked on the Fantastic Beasts film series , which is a prelude to the Harry Potter film series , where he directs the films while Joanne K. Rowling writes the scripts.

Life

Yates graduated from the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield .

In 2007, after Chris Columbus , Alfonso Cuarón and Mike Newell, he became the fourth director of the Harry Potter film series to direct the fifth part of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . Yates also directed all of the following parts -  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (2011).

Even after the film series ended, he remained loyal to the Harry Potter universe and filmed J. K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at the end of 2015 . The film opened in theaters in November 2016. Yates also directed the sequel Fantastic Beasts: Grindelwald's Crimes , which appeared in November 2018 .

His role models include David Lean , Ken Loach and Martin Scorsese . Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban are his favorites among the Harry Potter films . Typical of his films are the frequent daily newspapers with which he explains information that is only briefly mentioned. Other features include the relatively frequent use of handheld cameras and his repeated collaborations with soundtrack composer Nicholas Hooper and film editor Mark Day .
