Tyrant one is American drama - television series of Israeli filmmaker Gideon Raff . The plot revolves around the volunteer in the US exile living Bassam Al-Fayeed that his father, a despot in the Middle East , in the fictional country Abuddin returns, where the conflict between his personal moral value proposition and the family, social and political reality of his homeland. It was first broadcast on June 24, 2014 on the US cable channel FX . Due to solid ratings, FX extended the series for a second season in September 2014 and a third season in October 2015. In September 2016, FX Network announced that the series would be discontinued. The series ends with a cliffhanger . The German-language first broadcast took place on April 22, 2016 on the pay channel Sat.1 emotions .

Central figures are the family of the Los Angeles- based pediatrician Bassam "Barry" Al-Fayeed and his wife Molly , as well as Emma and Sammy .

Opposite is Jamal Al-Fayeed , Barry's older brother and son of the ruler Khaled . Jamal's wife Leila and Amira , the mother of the nation, take on other roles in the patriarchy .

The fictional but clearly Arab country of Abuddin is marked by war . The producers did not have a specific nation or ruling family as a model, even if in the first episode, for example, reference is made directly to Husni Mubarak by mentioning one of the characters . Tyrant was shot in various cities in Israel, such as Kfar Saba , Petakh Tikva and Tel Aviv , but also in Marrakech .

Although the ratings of Rotten Tomatoes are mostly good at 66 percent, the trade press is sometimes critical.
