Edward "Eddie" John David Redmayne , OBE (born January 6, 1982 in London , England ) is a British actor , singer and model . He became known to a larger audience through the role of Marius Pontmercy in Les Misérables (2012). For his portrayal as Stephen Hawking in The Discovery of Infinity (2014), he received numerous awards, including an Oscar .

Life and acting career

Eddie Redmayne was raised in London as one of five children of Patricia Burke, head of a moving service , and London businessman Richard Redmayne. He attended Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe west of London, Eton College , which he attended with Prince William in the same year , and studied art history at Trinity College , Cambridge . Despite his color blindness, he wrote his thesis on Yves Klein's signature color , International Klein Blue.

Eddie Redmayne was best known for his portrayal in Elizabeth - The Golden Kingdom . In 2008 Redmayne modeled for clothing brand Burberry . In 2010 he was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award , the most important English theater prize, for best supporting actor. He received the award for his performance in the play Red , where he appeared alongside Alfred Molina . In the same year he also received the most important American theater award, the Tony Award . In January 2012 he received the London Critics' Circle Theater Award 2011 for best Shakespeare actor for his title role in Richard II at the Donmar Warehouse in London .

For his appearance in the musical film Les Misérables (2012), Redmayne prepared himself by taking lessons with the London singing teacher Mark Meylan. The vocal recordings did not take place - as is usually the case in music films - in the recording studio, but on location in front of the camera. In 2014, Redmayne starred as Stephen Hawking in James Marsh's drama The Discovery of Infinity . In 2015 he won the Golden Globe in the category Best Actor - Drama , the Oscar for Best Actor as well as the BAFTA Award and the SAG Award , both also for Best Actor . He was nominated again for an Oscar in 2016 for the lead role in the drama The Danish Girl . In 2016, Redmayne first appeared in the role of magizoologist Newt Scamander in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them , the first of five planned films in the Fantastic Beasts series . In 2018 he also played this role in the sequel Fantastic Beasts: Grindelwald's Crimes .

On December 15, 2014, Redmayne married his girlfriend, Hannah Bagshawe. Their daughter Iris Mary was born on June 15, 2016.

On June 12, 2015, Redmayne was appointed Officer of the British Empire by Elizabeth II .
