The Aeronauts (dt. The aeronauts ) is an adventure film directed by Tom Harper , who as part of the August 30, 2019 Telluride Film Festival celebrated its premiere. At the center of the film biography are the balloon flight pioneer James Glaisher and the fictional Amelia Wren who is at his side. The film was released in UK theaters on November 8, 2019, in US theaters on December 6, 2019, and was included in Prime Video 's programming on December 20, 2019 .

action

In 1862, despite the concerns of her sister Antonia, the wealthy young widow and pilot Amelia Wren agrees to join the ambitious meteorologist James Glaisher on a balloon expedition to break the French record and fly higher than anyone else in human history. His intention for the flight is to take measurements in higher air layers in order to develop the meteorology for weather forecasting, which according to the film is considered unscientific up to this point in time. His research colleagues, including one with access to another balloon, do not support this goal and ridicule it. His father had suffered even more than James from this ridicule.

The start in London is dramatically presented to a paying crowd by Amelia and a show host on September 5th, which is clearly uncomfortable for the theorist James.

While Amelia takes a dog with him for show purposes, James has a battery of carrier pigeons on board in addition to a variety of measuring devices in order to report live on flight and weather data while on the move. While the two different characters get to know each other better, James saves Amelia's life in a first accident in a storm. As they rise above the clouds, the flight becomes calm and they are amazed by the view until they finally know that they have broken the record. But soon afterwards there is an argument as to whether they should go further up or go down again. The temperature keeps dropping, and there is snow and ice on the outer skin of their balloon. Nevertheless they decide the further ascent. At high altitudes, eventually below five degrees Fahrenheit, both of them notice that the hydrogen vent valve is iced up and that there is actually no way they can descend before they lose consciousness or freeze to death.

James' assistant, John Trew, can only follow their dangerous journey from the ground.

background

James Glaisher had worked in land surveying in Ireland for a number of years before he got the post of assistant at the observatories in Cambridge and Greenwich . After founding the Department of Meteorology and Magnetism in Greenwich, he took over the management of it in 1838 and held it for 34 years until he retired. He was a founding member of the Meteorological Society and the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain.

However, Glaisher became most famous in his day as a pioneer in aerology . Together with the balloonist Henry Coxwell , he undertook a total of 28 scientific balloon flights between 1862 and 1866. On their seventh flight on September 5, 1862, they climbed in the open basket to around 8,800 meters, which was a height that no one had ever reached. While Glaisher lost consciousness because of the thin air, Coxwell could only open the control valve with his teeth using his last strength to make the balloon sink.

While the balloon flight depicted in The Aeronauts is based on the flight of the two on September 5, 1862, Coxwell was replaced by the fictional young widow Amelia Wren. This figure is based on several truly living balloonists and adventurers, such as Sophie Blanchard , the first woman to work as a professional balloonist and to become a celebrated aeronaut after the death of her husband, the British Margaret Graham and Amelia Earhart , the famous American aviator.

production

The film was produced by Amazon Studios .

Directed by Tom Harper , who also wrote the script with Jack Thorne .

Eddie Redmayne took on the role of James Glaisher , a meteorologist who wants to test a theory with the balloon flight, Felicity Jones plays the young widow Amelia Wren. Both of them were most recently in front of the camera for the film The Discovery of Infinity from 2014. Amelia's late, adventurous husband, Pierre Rennes, is played by Vincent Perez and can be seen in flashbacks that tell a little backstory. Himesh Patel plays Glaisher's assistant John Trew, who follows the journey from the ground. Tom Courtenay plays the demented father.

The film was shot in London and elsewhere in the UK. So it was shot in the West London Film Studios, exterior shots were made at Greenwich Naval College and in Regent's Park, interior shots at Claydon House in Buckinghamshire and at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. Authenticity was a top priority for him and his colleagues, according to producer Todd Lieberman . Therefore, an attempt was made to film as much with a real balloon in the sky as the weather allows. Scenes in a real hot air balloon were created while a helicopter captured everything. George Steel acted as cameraman .

Oscar winner Alexandra Byrne was responsible for the costumes . The film music is composed by Steven Price .

The first image material was presented in August 2018. At the end of August 2019, Amazon Studios presented a first trailer. The film premiered on August 30, 2019 as part of the Telluride Film Festival . From September 8, 2019, screenings took place as part of the Toronto International Film Festival . In early October 2019 it will be presented at the London Film Festival . The film was released in UK theaters on November 8, 2019, in US theaters on December 6, 2019, and was included in Prime Video 's programming on December 20, 2019 .

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA .

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 72 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics .

Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter writes that is very lively told in near real-time adventure, offering thrills and great characters that should appeal to the audience. Director Tom Harper brings this unusual story to life. Although the serious intentions of Glaisher's expeditions in real life are recognized, no one can claim that what we see in the film cannot also be a true story.

In his review, Gregory Ellwood from The Playlist particularly emphasizes the equipment by David Hindle and Christian Huband , the work of cameraman George Steel and Harper's team for the digital effects, which in combination have created a journey that is both realistic and slightly fantastic.

Gross profit

The film grossed almost 2.6 million US dollars worldwide.
