The research project ReConFort (Reconsidering Constitutional Formation, Constitutional Communication by Drafting, Practice and Interpretation in 18th and 19th Century Europe) is a research project by Ulrike Müßig at the University of Passau, funded by the European Research Council with an Advanced Grant of 1.9 million euros .

content

As part of the project, researchers from Australia , Belgium , Germany , Great Britain , Italy , Poland and Spain conducted research under the direction of Ulrike Müßig at the University of Passau on European constitutional history .

The team dealt with the constitutional debates of the 18th and 19th centuries in five European countries ( Belgium , Germany , Italy , Poland and Spain ). The task of the project was to examine the cross-border interactions between the constitutional process and public debates in Europe in the late 18th and 19th centuries. ReConFort focuses on public discourse in five case studies, the Polish Sejm (1788–1792), the Spanish Cortes (1812), the Belgian National Congress (1830–1831), the Frankfurt Parliament (1848–1849) and the Italian Parliamento Subalpino ( 1861). The subject of consideration was in particular the constitution as the interplay of constitutional text, social context, political practice and interpretation. The project was able to demonstrate that communication about the constitution is just as important as the written text. The investigation of the constitutional processes of the late 18th and 19th centuries was based, among other things, on still largely unknown primary sources (cross-border correspondence and journalistic activities of important constitutional actors, including exile literature, as well as regional / national and cross-border constitutional journalism in the public media).
