Alexandra Byrne

Alexandra Byrne (* 1962 ) is an American costume designer who, in addition to an Oscar for best costume design, also won several other film awards for the best film costumes.

biography

Alexandra Byrne started out as a costume designer on Broadway and received a 1990 Tony Award nomination for Best Costume Design in Some Americans Abroad . In 1993 she worked as a costume designer for the television series The Buddha of Suburbia based on the novel of the same name by Hanif Kureishi and received her first nomination for the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Award) for this in 1994 . In 1994 she won the BAFTA Award for the costumes in Jane Austen's Seduction (1995).

At the 1997 Academy Awards , she was nominated for the Oscar for best costume design for Hamlet (1996) for the first time and received another BAFTA nomination for the costumes in this film. She was nominated for these two awards at the 1999 Academy Awards and the 1999 BAFTA Awards, this time for Elizabeth (1998). She also received the Best Costume Design Award for the film at the 1998 Satellite Awards .

For the costumes in The Phantom of the Opera (2004) she was nominated for a Satellite Award in 2004 , the Costumer Designer Guild Award in 2005, and the Saturn Award for best costume in 2005. For When Dreams Learn to Fly (2004) she was not only nominated for another Oscar in 2005, but also for another British Academy Film Award.

At the 2008 Academy Awards , she finally received the Oscar for best costume design in the film Elizabeth - The Golden Kingdom (2007). For this, she not only won another Satellite Award for the best costume design , but was also nominated for a BAFTA Award 2008 and another CDG Award.

She is married to British actor Simon Shepherd and has four children with him.
