action

In the (fictional) Eastern European city Sokovia the fight Avengers by the army of Baron von Strucker to Loki to salvage scepter that Hydra after the dissolution of SHIELD has fallen into their hands. Von Strucker is captured by the Avengers . Tony Stark discovers a hidden robot factory in the basement of his fortress . The twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff , who have both been given superpowers by von Strucker, are also in the building. Wanda manages to let her psychic powers play with Stark without being noticed, whereupon he helplessly witnesses the death of his teammates and the destruction of the earth by alien invaders in a vision.

After the Avengers recover the scepter, Stark and Bruce Banner analyze the artifact and, to their surprise, discover the existence of an artificial intelligence inside . Seduced by his vision, Stark came up with the idea of using this intelligence to perfect a computer system called Ultron that he had developed to protect humanity. He persuades Banner to help him implement artificial intelligence in his Ultron program and hides the dangerous experiment from the others. Stark has JARVIS supervise the transfer in his absence, but an error occurs: Ultron awakens to full consciousness in a helper robot created by Stark, overwhelms JARVIS and shows himself to the Avengers to announce his plan to "Peace for our time" bring about. The Avengers attack him and can destroy his robot body, but Ultron's consciousness is transferred to the Internet and thus escapes destruction; In addition, the auxiliary drones he controls manage to steal the scepter.

Ultron goes to von Strucker's fortress, which he previously murdered in his cell, and uses the facilities there to build an army of robotic drones into which he copies his consciousness. It is easy for him to recruit Wanda and Pietro for his purposes, as they once lost their parents to a gun from Stark Industries and are therefore seeking revenge. Together they visit the arms dealer Ulysses Klaue in South Africa to get a large amount of the metal vibranium, which can absorb any energy and which is also used to make Captain America's shield. The Avengers track her down and engage Ultron in a fight, but Wanda uses her psychic powers again and lets several of them live through their deepest fears. Banner then transforms into the Hulk and rages in the nearby city before he can be pacified by Iron Man and his more powerful "Hulkbuster" armor. Since the team is declared a danger to the general public after this incident and is also traumatized by Wanda's powers, Hawkeye takes his friends to his remote farm, where his family lives. Thor soon leaves again to join Dr. Selvig to go to a legendary source and find answers to his vision caused by Wanda. Unexpectedly, Nick Fury also appears on the farm, expresses his trust and new confidence in the Avengers and provides them with important information about Ultron's plans. He tries to get activation codes for nuclear weapons over the Internet, but an unknown hacker constantly changes them and thus withdraws them from Ultron's access.

In Seoul , Ultron is taking control of the scientist Helen Cho. He forces the expert in the development of artificial organic tissue to create a new body for him. He plans to transfer his consciousness into the stone from Loki's scepter, which is the source of his artificial intelligence, and with this to take over his newly created organic body. During this process, Wanda can read his mind for the first time via telepathy and learns about his real plans - the complete extinction of humanity. Then the Avengers arrive and embroil Ultron in a chase, which prevents him from fully transmitting his consciousness. Finally, the Avengers can take the new Android body into custody, but Black Widow is kidnapped by Ultron and locked in the fortress in Sokovia. The Avengers win Wanda and Pietro as new allies who have turned away from Ultron.

Back at the Avengers Tower , Stark plans to bring the artificial body to life without consulting the other team members and thus to complete his original Ultron program. Only Bruce Banner is supposed to help him - as well as the restored JARVIS, which escaped destruction by Ultron by transferring himself to the Internet and preventing Ultron from accessing the nuclear weapons there as the unknown hacker. The other teammates, especially Captain America , try to forcibly prevent the resuscitation, but suddenly Thor returns and, guided by the visions from the source, completes the process and brings the android completely to life. The android, called Vision , who gains consciousness from Loki's stone on his forehead, slowly instills the Avengers' trust by joining their battle against Ultron.

Black Widow is now sending signals from their prison in Sokovia to track down the megalomaniac robot. With the help of the vibranium, Ultron has developed a machine that is supposed to raise the city and the earth's crust beneath it. He plans to drop the huge rock mass from a great height onto the surface of the earth so that the devastating impact, like a meteorite impact , would wipe out humanity . The Avengers try to evacuate the city in time, but Ultron activates the machine, lets the city rise and sends his army against the superheroes. The Avengers can keep Ultron's robotic drones in check and free Black Widow from their cell, but they can't get all of the residents out of the flying city. Nick Fury suddenly shows up with James Rhodes , some loyal ex-SHIELD agents and a reactivated helicarrier, and helps the Avengers with the evacuation. Pietro is killed by Ultron when he throws himself protectively in front of Hawkeye and a boy. The angry Wanda then leaves her post and destroys Ultron's main body. This allows one of Ultron's drones to switch the unguarded machine to reverse thrust, causing the city to crash. At the last moment, the evacuation is completed and the city is blown to pieces by Thor and Iron Man just before it hits the surface of the earth. Vision has now been able to isolate Ultron from the Internet and thus cut off its escape route and delete its backup copies. Finally he destroys the last copy of Ultron drone.

Some time later, the Avengers and former SHIELD agents moved into new headquarters near New York. The Hulk, however, separated from the Avengers after the fight against Ultron in order to protect his friends and especially Black Widow, whom he became very close to in the course of events, from his uncontrollable anger. Hawkeye and Stark are also taking time out from the team. After the stone from Loki's scepter with the tesseract from Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel's The Avengers , the ether from Thor - The Dark Kingdom and the orb from Guardians of the Galaxy recently four of the six mighty infinity stones have appeared, Thor returns to Asgard to uncover the riddle. Captain America and Black Widow stay behind at base to team their newest recruits - War Machine , Falcon , Vision and Wanda .

In a scene in the credits, Thanos can be seen, who is dissatisfied with the work of his henchmen in search of the infinity stones, puts on a glove and announces that he will now take matters into his own hands.

Boycott by German cinema operators

After the German theatrical distributor Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Germany unexpectedly announced that it would adjust its distribution conditions from April 23, 2015 at the start of Avengers: Age of Ultron , a conflict arose between the distributor and many cinema operators. Disney wanted to set the rental rents for all sizes of town at 53 percent, define a minimum rental share, dispense with advertising cost subsidies and flat-rate fees and announced that from October 2015 the subsidies for 3D glasses would no longer be granted.

After the Hauptverband Deutscher Filmtheater (HDF Kino) and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kino - Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater (AG Kino), among others, sharply criticized Disney's approach, numerous cinema operators, especially in smaller cities, decided to boycott the film . As a result, Avengers: Age of Ultron was not shown in 193 German cinemas.

reception

Reviews

Cinema criticizes the “high speed” of the action spectacle, which often makes it seem “quite rushed”. The introduction of new heroes also ensures “a certain hero overkill”. The film also offers “massive action parts” and leaves the viewer “hardly any time to breathe”. At the same time, Joss Whedon focuses the plot on the "gradual dissolution process of the team" and thus particularly inspires the "hardcore fans".

Sabine Horst from epd Film awarded 4 out of 5 stars and was enthusiastic about the second Avengers adventure. Whedon maintains the "flat share feeling that fans appreciate about the Avengers" and "still keeps moving." She also praised the almost abstract form, which does without conspicuous contemporary political allusions, and "no Shakespearean family drama" disturbs. Age of Ultron is a “pure comic film” in which Joss Whedon “was perhaps the first to find a real cinematographic equivalent for the experimental visuality, the geometry of the comics with their now practically exploded, nested, extremely pointed image frames”.

Florian Kummert from the film magazine Kinokino was also positively impressed: “While many superhero films and action blasts perish due to their gigantomania and excess length ..., Joss Whedon manages the dramaturgical feat of giving all characters their freedom and action, humor and - there is also - quieter passages to weave into a whole. Of course, 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' is first and foremost a comic, crazy, loud, colorful, fun. There are car chases in just about every type of vehicle, and entire cities are turned upside down while Ultron rants about the destruction of the world. It crashes, it's fun, it's carefree blockbuster cinema, but with all the riot it never dulls the senses ”.

Film critic Adam Arndt from Serienjunkies.de is enthusiastic and thinks that The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is once again a “direct hit from Marvel, which can effortlessly maintain the balance between action, humor, thunderstorms and character moments. Since the first part brought so many positive moments of surprise to smile, celebrate and scream out loud, which understandably cannot be repeated here (Tony's Galaga-Gag, Hulk vs. Thor and Loki, Schwarma, the Levithian-Alien et cetera), falls my praise and judgment are minimally weaker. "

Gross profit

The film hit the box office in the United States, held it for a total of two weeks, and grossed over $ 191 million on the opening weekend. It grossed over 459 million US dollars in North America, making it the third most successful film there in 2015. The film was also very successful in China, where it grossed over 240 million US dollars, making it the fifth most successful film of the year. In Germany, the film also reached first place in the cinema charts and attracted over 900,000 people to the cinemas in its launch week. A total of 2.4 million people saw the film in this country, which means eleventh place on the list of the most visited films in 2015. Worldwide, Avengers: Age of Ultron achieved a gross profit of over 1.4 billion US dollars. This puts the film in fourth place on the list of the world's most successful films in 2015 and in 11th place on the list of globally successful films (as of August 8, 2020). However , the film failed to overtake its predecessor, Marvel's The Avengers , which grossed over $ 1.5 billion.

Trivia

The statements to be found here are better placed elsewhere in the article if they are adequately documented (see also the explanations in the film format , the recommendations for the structure of an article and the restraint with lists )
Parts of the cast at Comic-Con 2014.
  • At the end of the film The Return of the First Avenger , released in 2014, the credits scene saw a first reference to Avengers: Age of Ultron . Baron von Strucker heralds the beginning of an "age of miracles". At this point in time, Von Strucker was in possession of Loki's scepter and, with the twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, had two human “miracle weapons” under his control.
  • There are also several episodes in the second season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD that prepare and take up the plot of the film. Here it is revealed how the Avengers knew about the whereabouts of Struckers and the Zepters and why the helicarrier appeared out of nowhere.
  • The glove that Thanos picks up in the final scene is a reference to the six-part comic series The Infinity Gauntlet , published by Marvel Comics in 1991. The glove represents a connecting element for the infinity stones, which allowed Thanos in the comic series to direct the forces of the universe according to his will. Thanos' glove is for the left hand. Another glove for the right hand was already seen in the first Thor film and was there in the treasury of Odin. However, in the third Thor film, the antagonist Hela explains that this is a fake. This can also be recognized by the incorrectly colored infinity stone replicas that are placed in the glove instead of the infinity stones.
  • As in every MCU feature film, the creator of many of the characters, Stan Lee , has a cameo ; As a World War II veteran, he is a guest at a party at Avengers Tower .
  • In the film, Stark names the satellite that supplies his Hulkbuster armor with new parts, Veronica , a pop culture reference that does not come from the Marvel Comics. Joss Whedon stated in an interview that the inspiration for this reference to the character Veronica Lodge , Betty Cooper's best friend and rival (the latter linked to Bruce Banner's relationship with Betty Ross in Marvel Comics), came from Archie Comics . In early concept artworks, Veronica was still spelled with 'k', which is why “Veronika Satellite” is written in the film art book .
  • There are some historical and biblical allusions hidden in the film, including:
    • Tony Stark quotes former British Prime Minister Chamberlain as saying " Peace for Our Time " (when he creates Ultron) who said this in relation to the Munich Agreement . It indicates that in trying to do good, Stark actually created a monster.
    • When Ultron captured the indestructible metal Vibranium in order to form his new body from it, he breathed "On this rock I will build my church." - see Peter and his mention by Christ in the "Word of the Rock" ( Mt 16:18).
    • Shortly after Vision was created, when asked who he was, he replied: “I am who I am” - a biblical quote, see YHWH .
