action

The film begins with a retrospective showing Tony Stark in 1999 on New Year's Eve at a conference in Bern. There he meets the biologist Maya Hansen, who, with Extremis, invented an experimental process to change human DNA at will. On the way to her room he is approached by the scientist Aldrich Killian, who offers him a groundbreaking idea and suggests that he support his newly founded company. Stark casts off Killian and then turns to Hansen, who shows him her discovery.

In the present the world is being shaken by terrorist attacks by the mysterious Mandarin, who repeatedly spreads his messages via hijacked television channels. Stark's friend Colonel James Rhodes, in the armor of Iron Man (see Iron Man 2 ) also known as Iron Patriot , tries to capture the Mandarin with the help of the secret service. Due to the alien invasion in New York City , Stark suffers from spontaneous panic attacks or a post-traumatic stress syndrome and unconsciously finds his only protection in armor. The latest model of this high-tech suit "Mark 42" has the ability to wrap itself around its owner over long distances on demand or, if necessary, around a body that the owner chooses. Pepper Potts, who now lives with Stark, is not particularly impressed by his obsession with his suits.

Killian, who has changed significantly in appearance in recent years, offers Stark Industries a share in the Extremis project. As the person responsible, Potts refuses the offer because she sees the danger that Extremis could be used as a weapon.

Happy Hogan, chief security officer at Stark Industries, is suspicious of Killian and pursues his assistant Eric Savin to the TCL Chinese Theater . Savin hands a suitcase to an unknown man. When the man ingests the chemical in the suitcase, it explodes, destroying the theater. Happy is seriously injured in this incident. Angry about the injury to his friend, Stark threatens the mandarin , who is responsible for the events, and challenges him to a duel. In his subsequent research, Stark discovers that similarly mysterious explosions took place before the Mandarin became public.

The next day, Starks' villa is attacked by helicopter gunships. In order to save Potts, Stark has her wrapped in his new armor, and so she can safely leave the house with Hansen, who is also present, before Stark calls the armor back to save himself. Due to a malfunction of the suit, he cannot counter the attack, but is instead flown to Tennessee, where the suit fails completely after landing. In Tennessee, Stark meets the tech-savvy boy Harley. He gains access to a workshop and begins repairing his armor. He also begins, with Harley's help, to investigate an explosion that earlier occurred in the city and that has clear parallels with the Mandarin's attacks. Stark is attacked by two agents of the mandarin who have the ability to heat up their bodies and regenerate injuries. He succeeds in eliminating the attackers.

Shortly afterwards, Stark learns the background to the Extremis project and the effects it has had: Maya Hansen originally developed the virus to bring about complete regeneration of serious injuries, but in some cases the project led to the explosive destruction of patients. Killian supported Hansen financially, but turned Extremis into a weapon. The alleged terrorist attacks went back to the Extremis-related self-destruction of test subjects who hoped the medical project would cure war-related cripples.

With the help of the resurrected JARVIS , his AI butler, Stark finds out the whereabouts of the Mandarin, but finds out that the alleged terrorist is a hired actor named Trevor. Stark realizes that Killian is pulling all strings in the background, but is captured by Savin. Meanwhile, Killian has Iron Patriot kidnapped in Pakistan when he is looking for the mandarin; Pepper Potts is kidnapped by Killian after a conversation with Hansen and infected with Extremis. Killian now reveals his plan to come to power with the Extremis project by assassinating the president and using the current vice-president as his puppet ruler to gain government support. While trying to free Stark, Hansen is shot by Killian. Later, Stark is able to free himself and Rhodes with his armor summoned from Tennessee.

Disguised in Rhodes' Iron Patriot armor, Savin gains access to Air Force One , where he kidnaps the US president and sends him to Killian. Stark arrives at Air Force One and manages to kill Savin in a duel. Some passengers are sucked out of the aircraft before it explodes, but Stark can intercept them if they fall and set them safely down in the water.

Stark and Rhodes attempt to get into Killian's hiding place but are discovered and, without their suits, face an army of Extremis soldiers. Stark calls in all available Iron Man suits he's been working on recently for reinforcements. The suits controlled by JARVIS can stop Killian's henchmen , while Rhodes can save the president from the violence of his kidnappers. Under the protection of an Iron Man suit, Stark is about to save Potts, but has to watch as she falls into a sea of flames and seems lost. Stark now attacks Killian, but has no chance against Killian's Extremis forces. Shortly before Killian can take out Stark, he is killed by Potts, who survived the fall thanks to Extremis.

Purified by the near loss of Potts, Stark decides to rearrange his life. He instructs JARVIS to destroy any remaining Iron Man armor, later removes the Extremis virus from Pott's body, and eventually undergoes an operation that successfully removes the shrapnel and electromagnet from his chest, creating the permanent reactor in his chest is no longer necessary. In his concluding note "I AM Iron Man", however, he makes it clear that he will not change his identity, but will continue to fight as Iron Man.

After the credits, Tony Stark can be seen with Bruce Banner , to whom he is presenting the plot of the film as part of a self-suggested therapy. Bruce, who has only just woken up again, turns out to be a poor listener to Stark, which does not prevent him from telling his story further.

The review by Kino7.de praised the performance of the main actor Robert Downey Jr., but criticized that this was the only thing that stood out positively about the film. In addition, the decreasing quality of the series is criticized for the secondary characters:

“Marvel serves us the usual superhero food, which only stands out because of the great main actor Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man 3 offers solid blockbuster cinema peppered with drama and wit. It's just a shame that the figures next to Iron Man fade more with each part ... "

- Kino7.de

Critic.de criticizes the film's weaknesses in terms of content, but also praises how the third part forms a successful unit with the previous two parts:

"Iron Man 3 is expected to suffer from the mutually conflicting demands of entertainment and social criticism - but if you are willing to accept these restrictions, the end of the trilogy shows, despite many staging mistakes and dry spells, a thematic unity that is worthy of recognition worth it. "

- Critic.de

The lexicon of international films praised the "absurd humor and [the] clever dialogues [...]" and the "imaginative action scenes". The title character experiences a "coherent" further development.
