Paul Bettany
Paul Thane Bettany (born May 27, 1971 in Harlesden , London ) is a British actor .
Life
Bettany was born the son of the theater teacher and actor Thane Bettany and the school secretary Anne Kettler. He has an older sister, Sarah, and a younger brother, Matthew, who died in a fall when he was eight. He moved to London and made a living as a street musician.
At the age of 19 he began his studies at the Drama Center London in Chalk Farm. He made his stage debut in Stephen Daldry 's acclaimed West End - revival of An Inspector Calls at the Aldwych Theater, where he played Eric Birling. He also played in productions by Richard III. , Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar (for which he received a Charles Award nomination) of the Royal Shakespeare Company .
After a brief appearance in the finale of the Sean Bean series The Snipers as "HRH The Prince of Orange" at the Battle of Waterloo , he made his film debut with a small part in Bent , a Holocaust drama in which Clive Owen , a Jew, was also included Law and Ian McKellen played along. He continued to work on stage and television and established himself as an actor with a wide variety of roles, for example in Joe Penhall's Love and Understanding , which was played at London's Flatbush Theater and then ran in Connecticut . Roles in the television productions Killer Net and Heimkehr soon followed. He gave his last theatrical performance in One More Wasted Year and Stranger's House at the Royal Court Theater .
For his first lead role in Gangster No. 1 he was nominated for Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards and the London Critics' Circle nominated him for British Newcomer of the Year.
Bettany got to know the director Brian Helgeland and was seen in his first Hollywood production in Knight from Passion . He won the London Critics' Circle Film Award for Best British Supporting Actor for his role in Knights of the Passion . After the film was released, Helgeland recommended Bettany to other directors, including Ron Howard , who promptly cast Bettany in A Beautiful Mind . It was on this set that he became friends with Russell Crowe and met his future wife, Jennifer Connelly .
After A Beautiful Mind , Bettany was offered the role of the brutal serial killer "The Tooth Fairy" in Red Dragon alongside Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins . He turned down the role to play with Stellan Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman in Dogville , a film by director Lars von Trier . Another joint film with Russell Crowe was Peter Weir's Master & Commander - Until the End of the World . Bettany's silent portrayal of surgeon and naturalist Stephen Maturin earned him a BAFTA nomination, British Actor of the Year ( London Critics Circle ) and Best Actor ( Evening Standard ) awards. On June 28, 2004, he was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
Dogville and The Reckoning were shown only in a limited number of theaters in 2004. In September of that year Bettany made his leading actor debut in Wimbledon , a romantic comedy starring Kirsten Dunst . In the spring of 2005, he went to Vancouver to film Firewall , a Harrison Ford and Virginia Madsen thriller directed by Richard Loncraine , with whom he had previously worked at Wimbledon .
In the fall of 2005, Bettany starred in The Da Vinci Code , which is based on Dan Brown's bestseller and starred Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou . In the film he plays the monk Silas from Opus Dei .
In Inkheart (2008), the film adaptation of Cornelia Funke 's novel of the same name , Bettany can be seen as the fire eater "Dustfinger". As the latter's wife, Bettany's actual wife, Jennifer Connelly, also had a cameo . In 2009 Bettany starred in Young Victoria , South Solitary and in the role of Charles Darwin in the film Creation , which premiered in September 2009 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In 2010, Bettany played the agent Acheson in The Tourist on the side of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp . In 2011, he starred in Margin Call alongside Kevin Spacey and Jeremy Irons in the role of banker Will Emerson. In 2014 he played the researcher Max Waters again in Transcendence alongside Johnny Depp. 2015 saw Bettany in Avengers: Age of Ultron in the role of the android Vision . In 2016 he also played Vision in The First Avenger: Civil War and in 2018 in Avengers: Infinity War . In 2017, Bettany took on the eponymous role of American mathematician and bomber Theodore Kaczynski in the Netflix miniseries Manhunt: Unabomber .
Private life
On New Years Day 2003, Paul Bettany married actress Jennifer Connelly . Their son was born on August 5, 2003 and they moved to Brooklyn . Their daughter was born on May 31, 2011.
