Stories of Lost Souls is a film compilation (or in the most distant sense an episode film ) of independently produced short films on various topics from 2004 . Stories of Lost Souls is distributed in two versions, including a total of eight short films:

  • Bangers (1999)
  • A Whole New Day (1999)
  • The Same (2001)
  • New Years Eve (2002)
  • Sniper 470 (2002)
  • Standing Room Only (2004)
  • Euston Road (2004)
  • Supermarket (2004)

On the international market, Stories of Lost Souls is distributed without the two short films Supermarket and The Same . The version for the German market contains these two short films, but lacks Sniper 470 . The official trailer on the website of the international film distributor America Video Films shows scenes from all eight short films. All of the short films were previously published, also independently of one another, via various media (festival, television, internet).

action

The Same

Direction and script: Mark Palansky

A short man ( Jason Acuña ) is in love with his neighbor ( Jacqui Maxwell ). However, due to his height, it seems impossible to him to look attractive to the taller woman. For this reason, he overpowers one of his neighbors ( Josh Hartnett ), whom he also subjectively identifies as an adversary. Through an operation he transfers his neighbour's legs to himself and now feels “equal” to the demands of the adored neighbor. However, when she suspects how the little man got his long legs, she seems shocked at first. While the short man threatens to faint as a result of the operation, she reveals to him her physical weakness, which is surprisingly similar to that of the little man: Both of her legs have been amputated so she has to use prostheses.

Euston Road

Screenplay: Tristram Pye, Director: Toa Stappard

Cheater Y ( Paul Bettany ) meets X ( Charlie Condou ) in a hotel lobby . Y offers him the contents of his pockets, including the key to a sports car, if X succeeds in finding out with fewer than seven questions what is the reason for Y's recent financial ruin. X fails to find out this reason. When Y pretends to go to the bathroom, X takes the opportunity to look for the car in front of the hotel. Shortly afterwards he is looking for Y in the toilet, who must have left the toilet by now. Instead, he finds a small, silver model car that seems to come from a Monopoly game. Worried, he hurries back to his seat in the lobby to discover that Y has stolen from him.

Standing Room Only

Script and direction: Deborra-Lee Furness

An old man ( Michael Gambon ) waits to be admitted in front of a shop selling concert tickets for a popular artist . The number of cards is limited. He is gradually joined by another, younger man ( Hugh Jackman ), an attractive woman with a suitcase and finally a couple. An old lady does not manage to get a favorable position in the queue in time due to her ailments and has to discover that there is no card left for her.

Immediately after the concert, the people and their respective companions meet again on the street. To capture the evening, let one of the artists take a photo of you, who is leaving the venue at this moment. The group is astonished to find that the artist is obviously the old lady who just couldn't get a ticket when buying tickets.

New Year's Eve

Script and Direction: Col Spector

The two friends Matt ( Amit Lahav ) and David ( Stephen Mangan ) are on their way to a New Year's Eve party given by the "girlfriend of her boyfriend's girlfriend". They decide to take the driver of their taxi, Paul ( Philip Herbert ), as a guest to the party, but the friend of the two, Michael ( Bohdan Poraj ), and the guests - a somewhat upscale company - are not particularly enthusiastic. Society leaves no doubt that it will not tolerate the “simple” taxi driver in its midst. At the party, David meets 15-year-old Leah ( Keira Knightley ), who pretends to be 17 years old. David's friend Matt gets in touch with the slightly depressed Hannah ( Naomi Allisstone ). Meanwhile, David continues to flirt with Leah and is reprimanded by his friend because it is the niece of the hostess Jane ( Valerie Farr ). David eventually has to leave the party while his friend Matt and the taxi driver remain at the party.

The dinner party later became the basis for some scenes in Col Spector's film Someone Else .

During the taxi ride at the beginning of the short film, the classic piece The Ride of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner can be heard from the car radio .

Supermarket

Script and Direction: Illeana Douglas

The short film is set in a supermarket and was the template for the online series Illeanarama - Supermarket of the Stars . Most of the actors play themselves, except for the fans. Illeana Douglas , who has given up her Hollywood career, works with Daryl Hannah in a supermarket. While Illeana Douglas is treated as considerate as possible by the manager of the supermarket, he is relatively strict with her colleague Darryl Hannah. After Illeana Douglas is discovered and approached by a fan at the cash register, she begins, along with another colleague ( Sarah Silverman ), to give demonstrations in the supermarket between the shelves. She meets Jeff Goldblum , who supports her from then on with the demonstrations. The short film ends with all the protagonists - actors, customers and the manager of the supermarket - playing the song Count Your Blessings And Smile by George Formby Jr. to sing.

Bangers

Written and directed by Andrew Upton

Bangers shows the career woman Julie-Anne ( Cate Blanchett ), who lives with her unemployed mother ( Lynette Curran ) and a hangover. Julie-Anne returns home one afternoon preparing mashed potatoes and sausages for dinner. Despite the promotion owed to her, as she herself explains, strong social competence, she shows a latent sexual dissatisfaction. Even when preparing the meal, the sausages fail and the mashed potato mashed with difficulty falls to the floor. The story ends with her adding the sausages and ketchup to the mashed potatoes on the floor and finally informing her mother that the meal is finished.

A Whole New Day

Screenplay and Director: William Garcia

Vincent ( James Gandolfini ) wakes up from a drunkenness on the floor of his apartment. He notices that his wife Carol ( Kathrine Narducci ) has left him and cleared the apartment and asks his friend Jimmy ( Ned Eisenberg ) to come to him. Shortly afterwards, Angela ( Delilah Cotto ) appears who is interested in the apartment as a new tenant. The sight of angry Vincent, who was not aware that the apartment was already advertised for sublet, visibly intimidates Angela at first. When they both calm down, however, the two of them have a conversation in which Vincent complains about a wall in front of the kitchen window. To Vincent's amazement, however, Angela realizes that there is no wall in front of the window. At the same moment Jimmy arrives at Vincent's apartment and learns from Carol that Vincent is not here. A loud argument ensues between Jimmy and Carol. Vincent, who is in an adjoining apartment, overhears the argument. Amused, he realizes that he was wrong about the floor.

Sniper 470

Script and Direction: Paul Holmes

On a Trojan asteroid far from the earth , the sniper Sniper 470 ( Billy Boyd ) has the task of protecting the area from intruding spaceships.

Reviews

The Rotten Tomatoes editorial team wrote that the individual short films were "fascinating", but sometimes "confusing". They would address human will and bravery.

The lexicon of international films described the compilation as an “interesting compilation” of films that would see everyday situations with a “slightly distant look”. They would “impress” “with their willingness to experiment”, but “without always being completely convincing”.
