life and career
Daryl Hannah is the daughter of Donald Christian Hannah, who runs a tug and barge company, and Susan Jeanne Metzger, a film producer and former teacher . Her parents divorced when Daryl was a child; her mother later remarried. Daryl Hannah grew up in a family of eight siblings and half-siblings. As a child, she was suspected of having autism . They also suffered for years under sleep . In addition, she has had a prosthesis on her left index finger since an accident when she was three , but she only wears it temporarily.
At first, Daryl Hannah planned to become a dancer, but then decided to train as an actor. She was able to get information about the world of film from her uncle Haskell Wexler , a two-time Oscar winner in the “ Best Cinematography ” category .
The 1.78 m tall Hannah was one of the most successful female stars of the 1980s. She liked to play strong and unusual characters. She first attracted attention as a replicant Pris in Ridley Scott's cult film Blade Runner in 1982 . In 1984 she made her breakthrough as a mermaid in the comedy Splash . The film was a huge hit with both critics and audiences, bringing to fame for Hannah, co-star Tom Hanks, and director Ron Howard . In 1986 she played the leading role in the film Ayla and the Clan of the Bear (based on the first part of the Erdenkinder cycle by the writer Jean M. Auel ), in which she played a Cro-Magnon woman among Neanderthals . The film was a flop . In the same year, she appeared in the crime comedy Prosecutors You Don't Kiss the side of Robert Redford and Debra Winger . In 1987 she starred alongside Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen in Oliver Stone's film Wall Street . The drama was a box office hit, but Hannah received the Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actress for her role . In 1987 she also starred alongside Steve Martin in the comedy Roxanne . In 1989 she played a leading role in the tragic comedy Magnolien aus Stahl , which received positive reviews and was also successful in the cinema. In 1990, Hannah turned down the role of Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman , which eventually went to Julia Roberts , with whom she had starred in steel magnolias the previous year .
Hannah was unable to build on her great successes in the 1990s. Even so, she starred in some successful films such as Hunt for an Invisible Man (1992), Two Much (1996) and The Gingerbread Man (1998). She also starred alongside Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in the comedy A Crazy Couple (1993) and the sequel The Third Spring - Friends, Enemies, Fish & Women (1995). She also made several films for television, including Attack of the 20-Meter Woman (1993) and Das Fenster zum Hof (1998) with Christopher Reeve .
In the late 1990s she worked as an underwear model for the BHS British Home Store department store .
In 1994 she won the jury prize of the Berlinale with her 12-minute short film The Last Supper, which she also produced and directed herself .
After Hannah had appeared mostly in low-budget productions at the beginning of the new millennium , she got the role of Elle Driver, the opponent Uma Thurmans in Quentin Tarantino's film Kill Bill - Volume 1 and in its sequel Kill Bill - Volume 2 (2004 ). This role, which won her an MTV Movie Award , brought her back into the limelight. She then appeared in the films Silver City (2004) and Whore (2004), among others. For attention she made in 2002 by its appearance in the music video Feel of Robbie Williams . Hannah then stood in front of the camera for the Oscar-nominated documentary The Garden (2008) and for the drama A Closer Book (2010), the film adaptation of the short story Blindband by Gilbert Adair .

In the winter of 2008/2009 she was on board the Steve Irwin, a ship belonging to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society , which is trying to prevent Japan's whaling activities in the Antarctic as part of Operation Musashi. Hannah has already been arrested several times during protests: in June 2006, when she campaigned for the preservation of the South Central Farm in Los Angeles - her activities in the course of this conflict were also shown in the Oscar-nominated film The Garden - in June 2009 during the protest against the demolition of a hilltop for coal mining in West Virginia and in August 2011 during a protest against the construction of an oil pipeline in front of the White House in Washington .
