action

The film begins with preparations for the wedding of the diabetic Shelby and her fiancé Jackson. In the morning, Shelby decides to take her mother M'Lynn to her friend Truvy's beauty salon to get dressed up for the party that follows. There she suffers a seizure, which her mother blames on the stress of the wedding and the fact that Shelby's doctor advised against having children. After Shelby has had a glass of juice, she is fine for the time being. She even invites new beauty salon employee Annelle to her wedding.

Meanwhile, Shelby's father has an argument with his neurotic neighbor, Ouiser, who is upset at the volume of the constant revolver shots that Shelby's father is firing to get rid of the plague of birds during the wedding. Shortly before the wedding it turns out that he himself suffered hearing damage from the volume.

Shelby marries Jackson on Easter. While M'Lynn dances with her new son-in-law, she urges him not to have children of his own because she knows her daughter's rash views and advises him to bring Shelby to his senses.

Despite all warnings, Shelby tells her that she is expecting a baby the following Christmas. Both the pregnancy and the baby's birth go smoothly until one of Shelby's kidneys fails a year later. When her friends ask what to do next, Shelby tells them that M'Lynn is going to donate one of her kidneys. The operation goes well and both M'Lynn and Shelby can be discharged from the hospital. A few months later, however, Jackson found his wife unconscious on the terrace - her body had rejected the kidney. Shelby falls into a coma. A few days later, Shelby's doctor tells her family that she may never wake up again. Then M'Lynn and Jackson decide to turn off the life support machines. At Shelby's funeral, M'Lynn has a seizure, but thanks to the support of her friends, she ends up laughing.

After the funeral, Annelle tells M'Lynn that she plans to name her baby, whether it will be a boy or a girl, Shelby. M'Lynn agrees. During an Easter egg hunt, Annelle goes into labor and has to go to the hospital.

The plot is based on the fate of the sister of screenwriter Robert Harling. She died of diabetes in 1985.

useful information

The role of Shelby was originally intended for Meg Ryan , but this preferred the role of Sally in the movie Harry and Sally , through which she finally achieved her breakthrough. Julia Roberts helped the Oscar nomination, which she received for her portrayal of Shelby, to the cast for her later hit film Pretty Woman , which overnight made her one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood.

In 2012, an Afro-American television remake of the film was created, again with an illustrious cast. The main roles include the singers Queen Latifah and Jill Scott as well as Alfre Woodard and Phylicia Rashad .

IMDb
  • Lexicon of International Films : “The film, which is entirely geared towards the female stars and carefully calculated for predictable effects, offers an overabundance of events that are dealt with at the level of trivial fateful novels. The only bright spot is the outstanding performance of Shirley MacLaine. "
  • epd Film 4/1990: “A fairy tale hour from Hollywood: bright, garish and bitter, colorful, loud and boozy […]. Everything seems stiff, static and exaggeratedly artificial, the film lives solely from the presence of its actresses and from the brilliant (but mostly never-ending) dialogues. The pictures overflow with lush flower arrangements, kitschy decor and screaming colors. They should beguile with effort and mass - as if the visual weaknesses of the narrative style could be compensated for. Herbert Ross covers all of this with a colorful and sticky icing. His film is too sweet to be edible. "
