action

Law students Peter Burton and Tim Garrity become friends. After graduating, Peter sets himself the goal of becoming a US Senator . He is hired as assistant to Senator Stiles, Diana Stiles' father.

Tim's friend Diana begins a relationship with Peter, who can offer her a higher social status. She later marries him. Burton finds a sponsor who wants to get rid of an annoying competitor in a tender. Burton hands his now prosecutor friend a few allegations. When Garrity checked this, it was spread in the media that an investigation would be pending against the competitor . The competitor is not awarded the contract and Garrity is suspended because he was careless to a journalist on the phone about the investigation. When Garrity learns he was set up, he suggests that he might help with the investigation into Burton and his sponsor.

Burton wants to run for Congress for now . He requests assistance from his father-in-law, Senator Stiles. At the same time, he suggests that the senator's serious illness could become public. Stiles is outraged, but he agrees. Diana, Stile's daughter and Burton's wife, grows angry when she learns of the deal and her husband's blackmail attempt.

Garrity, who works undercover for the investigative authorities, becomes Burton's campaign manager and in this way meets Burton's financier. Burton wins the election, but Diana notifies him during the ceremony that she will file for divorce. Shortly thereafter, he learns that Garrity is collecting evidence and accusing him of treason.

Burton is arrested and Garrity's boss congratulates his undercover agent. Tim, however, regrets that Burton’s election is a major humiliation for his friend, as he is already getting a lot of press coverage. Then Tim learns from his boss that law would only become a profession if it cost you something to practice.

A few days later, Garrity and Burton meet again. Burton brings a case of champagne because he lost a previous bet - although he was elected as a MP, he is not allowed to take his place in Congress because he will not be sworn in. Garrity warns him that he may have to testify against him as a witness.
