Mandel Bruce "Mandy" Patinkin (born November 30, 1952 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actor and singer .

Life

Mandy Patinkin became known as an actor and singer on Broadway , where he continues to this day. In 1980, he received a Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Ernesto Che Guevara in the musical Evita . He received two other nominations in this category in 1984 and 2000.

In 1984 Patinkin played the painter Georges Seurat in the world premiere of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sunday in the Park with George on Broadway , for which he received nominations for the Tony and Drama Desk Awards . In 1985 he took part in a concert performance of the Sondheim musical Follies . He also gave concerts as a singer (among others with Patti LuPone ) and recorded records.

In 1981, Patinkin starred in Miloš Forman's ragtime based on the novel by EL Doctorow . He then took on the role of Julius Rosenberg in 1983 in the film Daniel by director Sidney Lumet , who was executed with his wife in 1953 for betraying nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union. In the same year he played the main male role in Barbra Streisand's directorial debut Yentl , based on a short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer . Patinkin pursued his preference for children's films through his participation in films such as The Prince's Bride  - whose character, the Spanish cavalier and fencer "Inigo Montoya", he calls his favorite character -, as well as in the comedy Help! Everyone is the greatest and in the Muppets offshoot The Adventures of Elmo in Grummelland . He was also a voice actor for the Japanese anime The Castle in the Sky .

In the movie Alien Nation - Spacecop LA 1991 , later the basis for a television series , he stood as an extraterrestrial policeman to a detective ( James Caan ) in solving a crime. Patinkin was also barely recognizable behind his actor's mask in the film adaptation of the comic book Dick Tracy by Warren Beatty , in which he played the character of 88 Keys . His first successful role in a television series was the character of the arrogant and brilliant surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Geiger in the television series Chicago Hope , which he temporarily left for health reasons, as he had to undergo corneal transplants in both eyes . He had previously portrayed a medic in 1991 in Der Doctor - An Ordinary Patient .

In 1995, in the episode Lisa's wedding of the animated series The Simpsons , he spoke the snooty English groom Hugh St. John Alastair Parkfield ; In 1997 he played the hunchbacked Quasimodo in a TV version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame . In Hombres armados (Men with Guns) , an independent film by John Sayles about a doctor in Latin America who is caught between the front lines of a civil war, he also appeared in Lulu On The Bridge , the directorial debut of the writer Paul Auster , for which he is was inspired by Frank Wedekind's Lulu tragedy .

In 2003 and 2004, Patinkin starred in the television series Dead Like Me as Rube , the boss of a group of soul collectors. The series was discontinued after two seasons. From 2005 to 2007 he played the role of Supervisory Special Agent Jason Gideon in the American crime series Criminal Minds , which he initially left without a public statement. He returned to the series for two episodes so that his role received a reasonable conclusion. Five years later, in an interview, he stated the reason for his departure: He could no longer bear the cruelty of the series.

Since 2011 he has played the role of Saul Berenson in the Homeland series .

Patinkin has been married to actress Kathryn Grody since 1980 and has two sons.

On February 12, 2018, he was honored with the 2,629th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
