Patti LuPone
Patti LuPone (born April 21, 1949 in Northport , Long Island , New York ) is an American singer and actress who is considered one of the most distinguished musical actresses of her time. She has received two Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards for her work ; she was also twice nominated for an Emmy .
Life and accomplishments
Patti LuPone has Italian ancestry. Her father worked in the administration of a school, her mother was a librarian. LuPone took dance lessons and performed with her brothers as a member of The Lupone Trio . She studied at the Drama Division of the Juilliard School .
The actress made her debut in 1972 in the play The School for Scandal ; her film debut followed in the television film The Time of Your Life from 1976. For her starring role played in 1979 in the musical Evita , she received the 1980 Tony Award . In 1985 she received the Laurence Olivier Award for best musical singer. Her role in the fantasy television film The Song Spinner (1995) earned her a 1996 Daytime Emmy nomination . She was nominated for an Emmy in 1998 for one of the two guest appearances on the television series Frasier .
In the comedy State and Main (2000) LuPone played one of the bigger roles. For this role she received the National Board of Review Award in 2000 as a member of the acting company ; in 2001 she received the Florida Film Critics Circle Award and was nominated for the Online Film Critics Society Award . In the film drama City by the Sea (2002) she appeared in a larger role on the side of Robert De Niro and Frances McDormand . In 2008 she received her second Tony Award for the role of Rose in Gypsy .
LuPone has been married to cameraman Matthew Johnston since 1988 and has one son.
In 2010 LuPone published her memoir under the title Patti LuPone, A Memoir . She had chosen this title from a series of proposals that were sent to her as part of a competition.
