State and Main is an American - French comedy film released in 2000 . Directed by David Mamet , who also wrote the script. Waterford, a small town in the USA, turns out to be the perfect backdrop for the historical film "The Old Mill" to be shot. The fact that filming keeps stalling because of unforeseeable problems makes the production of the film much more difficult.

action

A group of filmmakers comes to the small town of Waterford , Vermont , to shoot the historic film The Old Mill . They discover on site that the mill intended as a backdrop was destroyed by fire. Director Walt Price hires screenwriter Joseph Turner White to adapt the script to move the plot to a fire station . However, White suffers from writer's block.

The leading actress Claire Wellesley demands an additional fee of 800,000 dollars if she is to appear in a nude scene. Male lead actor Bob Barrenger seduces the underage Carla, while White begins a relationship with local Annie Black. The film producer Marty Rossen comes to inspect the filming.

Reviews

Film-Dienst wrote that the film was a “satirical comedy about the Hollywood business” with “accurate dialogues acquired from personal experience” . The “well-humored” actors would “make no secret of it” , “what fun they had, pulling their own profession and the associated clichés through the cocoa” . The film offers "excellent comedy entertainment" .

Cinema magazine described the film as a "funny film satire with snappy dialogues" . The director takes "with much indulgence for human weaknesses on the star fame and the turmoil of the film business" .

Awards

David Mamet and William H. Macy each won an Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival Award . The cast received the National Board of Review Award in 2000 .

The cast received the Online Film Critics Society Award in 2001 , for which David Mamet was also nominated for his screenplay. The film for Best Comedy , Rebecca Pidgeon and David Mamet as screenwriter were nominated for a 2001 Golden Satellite Award . Rebecca Pidgeon was nominated for the 2001 Phoenix Film Critics Society Award . David Mamet was nominated for the 2001 Chicago Film Critics Association Award screenwriter ; he and the cast were nominated for the Chlotrudis Award in 2001. Mamet and the ensemble won the 2001 Florida Film Critics Circle Award . The film was awarded the Artios of the Casting Society of America .
