Charles Edward Durning (born February 28, 1923 in Highland Falls , New York , † December 24, 2012 in New York City , New York) was an American actor . The heavyweight mime has been one of the most prominent supporting actors in Hollywood since the 1970s. He played one of his most famous roles in 1982 as " Tootsies " romantic admirers.

Life

As a 21-year United States Army Ranger was Durning, the son of an Army officer, a soldier in World War II during the invasion on D-Day at the beach section of Omaha Beach involved. Durning was one of the few who survived the Malmedy massacre in December 1944. He received several military awards, including the Silver Star and the Purple Heart three times .

After the war, Charles Durning initially earned his living as a metal worker, elevator operator, taxi driver and waiter. After studying acting at New York University, he was mainly employed as a dancer in various dance palaces. After that, his theater career began mainly with Shakespeare roles.

Charles Durning made his first brief film appearance in Ernest Pintoff's Harvey Middleman, Fireman in 1965 . Twice he was responsible for the Tony Award nominated, for the first time in 1965 for his role of a university sports coach in the play That Championship Season and for the second time in 1983 for his role as "Big Daddy" in Tennessee Williams -Stück Cat on a Hot Tin Roof .

However, Charles Durning did not reach general fame until 1973 as Lieutenant Snyder in the successful film The Clou by George Roy Hill , in which he was seen as a corrupt inspector. The film established the gray-haired, heavyweight actor in Hollywood as a distinctive character actor, who was regularly seen in high-profile supporting roles, especially in the 1970s and 1980s.

He was nominated twice for an Oscar in the category “Best Supporting Actor” : 1982 as a singing politician in Colin Higgins' The Most Beautiful Whorehouse in Texas and 1983 for his role as “Colonel Ehrhardt” in the Mel Brooks remake of To Be or Not to Be . Durning played one of his best-known roles in 1982 as the romantic admirer of Tootsie Dustin Hoffman.

Since 1975, Durning has been nominated nine times for an Emmy Award ; including 2005 for his guest role as Ernie Yost in the episode The Hero of Iwo Jima (in the original: Call of Silence ) of the CBS television series NCIS and most recently in 2008 for his 24 guest appearances as John Gavin Sr. in the television series Rescue Me (2004-2007 ).

Durning was honored with a star in the film category on July 31, 2008 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame ; his star is located at 6504 Hollywood Boulevard next to that of his youthful idol, James Cagney . He died on December 24, 2012 at the age of 89. His grave is in Arlington National Cemetery .
