National Board of Review
The National Board of Review ( NBR ) is a New York organization of filmmakers and film scholars that annually awards important film awards.
history
The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures was founded in New York in 1909 in protest against then Mayor George McClennan. A year earlier, the latter had ordered the revocation of the gaming license for cinema films in order to stop the demoralizing effect of the still young medium on the population.
On their constitutionally consisting guaranteed freedom of expression, were opened cinema operator (as Marcus Loew), film distributor ( Pathé and others) and the private Art - College Cooper Union for the New York Board of Motion Picture Censorship together (1912 renamed the National Board of Censorship and 1915 in National Board of Review of Motion Pictures ). They wanted to recognize outstanding films and advocate the new, culturally groundbreaking art form.
To avoid government censoring of films, the National Board of Review became the unofficial reviewer for new releases in 1915. The Passed by the National Board of Review seal of approval appeared in the opening and closing credits of films until the 1950s . The published journals such as the National Board of Review Magazine (1926–1942) or Films in Review (since 1950), in which greats such as Pearl S. Buck , Alfred Hitchcock , Fritz Lang or Tennessee Williams published , also received worldwide attention .
Today the National Board of Review is a not-for-profit organization of filmmakers, as well as teachers , students, and historians in the field of film. The main activity is the offer of seminars and courses as well as the awarding of scholarships .
Awards and categories
Since 1920 the members have been voting on the best films of the year, published until 1928 in lists with 40 titles each in alphabetical order, from 1929 in equally alphabetical lists for the Top 10 Best Films and the Top 5 Best Foreign Films . Since 1932, the best film from these top 10 has also been recognized and since 1934 the best foreign film . Today the organization sees over 300 films annually in the presence of the filmmakers and at the end of each year evaluates the best films in up to 28 different categories. Since there is no connection between the organization and the film industry, and because it is traditionally the first film circle to award its film awards annually (usually in December), the NBR Award enjoys the reputation as an alternative to the Oscars , which are more oriented towards film hits than film art seem to be. Since 2000, the film awards have been presented in a ceremony in January, but the announcement of the winners one month in advance has been retained.
