Cinema operators ensure the technical and organizational requirements for a film showing in the cinema .

There are commercial cinema operators and those who are active in the non-commercial sector. Most of the operated cinemas are fixed facilities with year-round operation. The term can also refer to the operator of a traveling cinema or a seasonal open-air cinema . The operator is not necessarily a natural person ; cinema chains ( multiplex cinemas ), clubs or other organizations can also operate a cinema as a legal person . The operator is often supplemented by local managing directors who carry out the organization on site.
tasks
The cinema operator is responsible for the provision of suitable rooms, for adequate technical equipment, for the running of the events and for the program , which includes content (program design) and logistical (film ordering and billing, shipping) work as well as public relations . Commercial training is helpful, but not compulsory. Many of these tasks (box office, admission, screening, but also film ordering and billing to the film distributor as well as press work and advertising ) can be delegated by the operator to employees.

There are 1,630 cinemas throughout Germany with a total of 4,637 screens and 782,742 seats. This means that the five largest cinema operators only operate around a seventh of all cinemas, but around a third of all screens and almost half of all seats.
