Tigers Tubingen - formerly SV 03 Tübingen (1952-2000, 2002-2004), Wired Minds Tübingen (2000-2002) - is a basketball team from the Baden-Württemberg town of Tübingen , currently in the Pro A plays. The basketball department of SV 03 Tübingen was originally founded in 1952. In 2002 the first men's team was spun off as Pro Basket Tübingen GmbH from SV 03 Tübingen, which, however, is still a partner in the GmbH. From 2004 to 2018, the Tigers played in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). The best final result so far was the two 10th places in the 2006/07 and 2012/13 seasons. The home games have been played in the 3132-seat Paul Horn Arena since 2004 .
history
1952 to 2002 - Foundation and establishment in the 2nd division
The Tübinger Sportverein 1903 eV was founded in 1903 and is generally known as SV 03 Tübingen. 49 years after it was founded, in 1952, a basketball department was established. This played its first game in the Württemberg Oberliga on October 25, 1952. In 1972 they won the Württemberg championship and SV 03 rose to the top division. The B-Jugend won the German championship in 1981 and two years later SV 03 made it to the second basketball league for the first time. Since then, the university townspeople have never played in a lower league again. In 1992 they made their first promotion to the first Bundesliga, but they were relegated straight away.
The B-youth succeeded again in 1997 to win the German championship, but the resurgence of the first team could not be realized until 2001. In the promotion season, ALBA Berlin surprisingly managed to defeat 87:84 in the cup. The team around DeJuan Collins , who was the top scorer of the 2nd Bundesliga South , was largely able to be held together and was reinforced. But WiredMinds Tübingen, as the first team in the basketball department was now called, had to be relegated at the end of the season. Because the registration form for Roman Horvat , who switched to WiredMinds during the season, was submitted too late by the Tübingen team. All games in which he was used were then counted as defeats and so they had to relegate to the 2nd division again.
2002 to 2004 - ProBasket Tübingen GmbH
In July 2002 the ProBasket Tübingen GmbH was founded and thus the first team of the basketball department of SV 03 Tübingen was spun off from the club. However, the sole shareholder is SV 03 to this day. Harald Prinz as managing director and Michaela Steck as head of the office were the only employees in the management of the association at that time - both with half a position. Head coach was still Uwe Sauer, with whom the Tübingen team had already been promoted to and relegated to the first division.
For the new season with the clear goal of advancement, winger Robert Wintermantel , who is now managing director of ProBasket GmbH, was signed up. In January, Brian Jones was added , but the climb was still just missed. Uwe Sauer's contract was not extended and Georg Kämpf was hired as the new head coach. Led by point guard Brian Jones, the longed-for rise was achieved.
2004 to 2009 - First years as WALTER Tigers with a new name sponsor
After the Tübingen basketball players competed again in the second division as SV 03 Tübingen, Walter AG was won as the new name and main sponsor with the rise . There were also other changes in the team that was now called WALTER Tigers Tübingen: Georg Kämpf left the Neckarstadt team for personal reasons and was replaced by Pat Elzie . In addition, the team was strengthened with the former national player Tim Nees , among others , in order to achieve the goal of relegation and the Tigers moved from the Uhlandhalle to the newly built TüArena (today: Paul Horn-Arena ).
Despite the smallest budget in the league with 800,000 euros, Elzie's team managed to keep the class. In the 2004/2005 season it was still against relegation and after four defeats in a row Pat Elzie was released in January. The former Finnish national coach and trainer of TSK Würzburg Aaron McCarthy was introduced as the new head coach . He managed to prevent relegation and end the season in 12th place.
The Tigers started the 2006/2007 season with a budget of 1.5 million, but the most important player, Bingo Merriex, could not be held. But as the team was specifically strengthened, McCarthy's team managed to reach 10th place in the end. To date, this is the best final result of the Tübingen team. In May 2007 Christian Roth succeeded the previous managing director Harald Prinz. However, he had no experience with basketball. The new season did not go as desired, although the squad was largely held together and Bingo Merriex was also brought back. After eight defeats in nine games, Aaron McCarthy had to take his hat off in December 2007. Assistant coach Rainer Kloss took over as interim trainer for about a month until a successor was found in January with Tolga Öngören . With him the relegation could be prevented and the season ended in 15th place.
After only one year, the heavily criticized managing director Christian Roth was dismissed in August 2008. Robert Wintermantel , who played with the WALTER Tigers until 2007, was signed as a replacement . Despite the necessary financial savings and a smaller budget, the final result of last season managed to improve by one place.
2009 to 2018 - continuity and decline in 2018
In May 2009 it was announced that the contract of head coach Öngören was not extended and that the new season will be contested with Igor Perović . Like Wintermantel , Perović was still active as a player for the Tigers a year earlier and was the much cheaper alternative to Öngören. Also raško katić was that four years is an extremely important part of the team, left the Tigers. Thanks to Perović's good relationships, the team was strengthened with BBL legend Aleksandar Nadjfeji , among others . Despite further austerity measures, the Swabians finished the season in 12th place. The Tübingen team also finished the following two seasons in 12th place, although the budget remained under two million euros and the squad changed significantly.
For the 2012/13 season, Reggie Redding , Vaughn Duggins , Tyrone Nash and captain Josh Young were able to keep several top performers from the previous year, only the departure of build-up Lou Campbell could not be adequately replaced. In addition, the people of Tübingen also received a new training hall, which greatly improved the training situation. In the end, the Tigers landed in 10th place and the playoffs were just missed.
The 2013/14 season brought some changes with it. The top scorer Redding and Duggins left Tübingen, but the squad was strengthened with former Munich Jonathan Wallace and Alex Harris . U-20 national player Bogdan Radosavljević and returnees Aleksandar Na wurdenfeji were signed from Munich . The latter not only played as a player, but also supported Perović as an assistant coach. But the season turned out differently than expected. The team did not get going and had to deal with enormous bottlenecks in some positions. Anatoly Kaschirow was only signed back shortly before the middle of the season , who was supposed to fill the previously vacant center position. When the Tigers were stuck in last place in the table for weeks, the most famous Tigers player to date, the ex- NBA pro Daequan Cook , was signed. Triggered by him, one expected a performance boost from the team. In fact, thanks to the signing of ex-tiger Branislav Ratkovica , some victories were celebrated again, until the relegation then depended on the last game of the season in Tübingen against Phoenix Hagen . The Tigers won this heartbeat final with flying colors and again celebrated relegation in the top German division.
After the 96:10 defeat on December 23, 2015 against Telekom Baskets Bonn , Igor Perović announced his resignation as coach of the Tigers. Interim trainer was the previous assistant trainer Jens Leutenecker. A few days later, the American Tyron McCoy was signed as the new head coach. Under his leadership, the Tübingen team finished the 2015/16 season in 14th place in the table.
The start of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season failed thoroughly: After ten defeats in a row, coach McCoy was sacked on November 20, 2017. Mathias Fischer was hired as McCoy's successor . Even under Fischer, however, there was no lasting success and so the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA as bottom of the table was determined at an early stage . In mid-May 2018, Walter AG announced that it would no longer appear as the team's namesake and that it would reduce its support as the main sponsor.
2018 to 2020 - unsuccessful promotion and conversion into an AG
Shortly after the end of the 2017/18 season, the previous assistant coach and former player Aleksander Nadjfeji was introduced as the new head coach for the rebuilding of the 2nd Bundesliga. In January 2019, Nadjfeji was replaced as a trainer: "The sporting development and situation of the team has now forced us to act," said managing director Robert Wintermantel, justifying the move. Of the previous ten games, Tübingen had won four and lost six under Nadjfeji and slipped to 14th place in the table. Georg Kämpf was hired as Nadjfeji's successor until the end of the 2018/19 season , taking on his third term as a Tübingen trainer. The 2018/19 season ended with the Tigers in 9th place.
Doug Spradley was hired as a coach for the 2019/20 season . Four of the first six league games under Spradley could be won, in the meantime they were even leaders.
On October 2, 2019, the Tigers announced a reorganization or conversion into a stock corporation and the sale of 60% of the shares in the association. As a result of the sales, the share capital could be increased from € 100,000 to € 250,000. Zeltwanger, GMG Color and an alliance of partners Brillinger, Hofmeister, Mey Generalbau and two anonymous private individuals each contributed € 50,000. In addition, the budget should increase up to 3 million euros until the rise again. On September 29, 2019, the Supervisory Board appointed the new Management Board, which consists of Michael Bamberg , Saskia Biskup and Robert Wintermantel .
Doug Spradley was released on January 1, 2020, because, according to the team management, the performances in the previous games were "unsatisfactory and at the same time worrying". Under Spradley, Tübingen had won eight of its 16 league games by then. Assistant coach Andrew Hipsher was initially temporarily transferred to the position, at the end of January 2020 the Tübingen team decided to contest the remaining 2019/20 season with Hipsher as head coach. On March 16, 2020, it was decided to cancel the league with immediate effect due to the COVID-19 pandemic . At the time of the cancellation, 29 game days had already been played. The Tübingen finished the season in 12th place in the table.
On April 16, 2020, the Finn Daniel Jansson was introduced as the new head coach. With the signing of the Finn, the Tübingen team combined a change of course and decided to increasingly rely on young German players in the future. On April 20, 2020, a crowdfunding campaign was started in favor of the basketball department of SV 03 Tübingen, in which an amount of € 30,000 was targeted. Ultimately, the campaign even managed to generate revenue of almost € 40,000.
society
The Tigers emerged from the 1st men's basketball team of SV 03 Tübingen , which is still one of the shareholders today. This has around 1,800 members and is one of the largest multi-disciplinary associations in the region. In addition to basketball, there are eleven other departments at SV 03 Tübingen, such as football , handball , boxing or athletics .
All other men's, women's and junior basketball teams also play under the name SV 03 Tübingen. The four men's teams play from the regional league to the regional league, the women play in the regional league. The latter played in the second division from 1986 to 1988. In total, the basketball department currently (December 2019) has over 400 members.
Young Tigers Tübingen
The Tigers' junior teams compete as Young Tigers Tübingen in the NBBL (U19) and JBBL (U16), each of the highest leagues in Germany. For the NBBL, the team from then coach Manuel Pasios was able to qualify for the first time in 2010. Before that, from 2006 to 2009 they played together with the BBA Ludwigsburg as SG Ludwigsburg / Tübingen in the NBBL. The Tigers have played in JBBL since it was founded in 2009. Only for the 2010/2011 season did they not qualify. In the meantime, the NBBL team is no longer trained by Manuel Pasios, but by Kristiyan Borisov and Martin Ströbele. In 2018, Pasios succeeded Claus Sieghörtner as coach of the regional league team.

Venue
Since being promoted to the basketball league in 2004, Tübingen has played its home games in the Paul Horn Arena, which has a capacity of almost 3,200 spectators . Before that, they played in the Uhlandhalle in Tübingen. Since September 29, 2007, the former TüArena has been called the "Paul Horn Arena". It is named after the Tübingen tool company Paul Horn . The hall is equipped with two mobile basketball hoops, which, like a mobile parquet floor, are set up especially for the Tigers' home games. Tickets for the home games can, if still available, be purchased both on site and online.
Rivalry with Ulm
The origins of the rivalry between Ratiopharm Ulm and the Tigers go back to the 2003/04 season, when both teams were still playing in the second division as SSV Ulm and SV 03 Tübingen and were fighting for promotion. In the first half of the season, Tübingen was able to prevail in Ulm after two extra times. The game also went into extra time in the second leg in Ulm and in the end Tübingen was again the winner. With that, the advancement of the Tübingen was as good as certain and the sparrows had to wait two more years before they could also be promoted to the BBL.
Since the Ulm ascent in 2006, the Tübingen team has only managed to win four of 24 derbies. The last win against Ulm was some time ago, on February 26th 2011 an 84:81 away win was recorded. The Ulm team also won the last derby before relegation in Tübingen in the 2017/18 season, when there was a 95:82 defeat. The Tübingen team ended the season with only one win in last place in the table.
Fan clubs
The Tigers have three official fan clubs: The Neckar Tigers have been supporting the team since 2002, the Tuefosi10 have been an official fan club since 2010. There is also the Supporters Tübingen , which is not a registered association. Both the Neckar Tigers and the Supporters Tübingen organize trips away, choreographies and chants in the hall.
mascot
The " Tigerle" has been the mascot of the Tigers since it was promoted to the basketball league in 2004 . In the meantime, the "Tigerle" was named after the main sponsor Walter . The "Tigerle" primarily provides atmosphere and entertainment in the breaks and time-outs at the Tigers' home games. At the mascot world championship of Stefan Raabs TV Total on June 1st, 2006, in which mascots from different sports took part, the tiger managed to reach third place.
