The football club Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e. V. , commonly known as FC Schalke 04 , is a German sports club from the Gelsenkirchen district of Schalke . The flagship of the basketball department has long been the men's team, which played ProA in the 2nd Bundesliga .

history

Old department logo until 2013

The basketball department was created in 1974 when SG Eurovia Buer joined FC Schalke 04. The SG Eurovia Buer was formed for the 1972/1973 season from the clubs BG Eurovia Buer and ASC Gelsenkirchen, whose basketball department emerged from BV Erle. Due to the rise of BC Gelsenkirchen in 1971 in the second-class regional league, there were three clubs from Gelsenkirchen in one league at that time. The founding of the SG and the subsequent affiliation to FC Schalke 04 was therefore also a consequence of this oversupply. The incorporation of Eurovia Buer went back to an initiative of the later politician Peter Paziorek .

After a few years in the 2nd Bundesliga (founding member 1975), the club rose to the basketball Bundesliga in 1982, but was relegated again immediately in 1983. In the second division season 1983/84 they became champions of the point round, in the promotion round the team lost to the Düsseldorf BG and thus missed the return to the Bundesliga. After three years in the second division, he was relegated to the regional league in 1986, which was initially corrected a year later with the promotion. After four more second division seasons, in 1991 the club was relegated to the regional league and in 1998 the club even went down to the second regional league.

In 2000 they returned to the 1st Regionalliga and in 2004 they were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 2006/07 season , the 6th place was achieved, which means qualification for the new substructure of the basketball league, the ProA . From 2003 to 2007 Hubert Beck looked after the team as a coach. He retired after the 2006/07 season, with Keith Gray , a former Bundesliga top player, who had previously worked as a coach in Essen, was hired as a coach. Relegation to the new ProA league was issued as the season's goal. After a failed season opener Gray had to leave in November 2007, his predecessor Beck was brought back as his successor, who initially announced that he only wanted to stay in office until the end of the 2007/08 season. Beck led Schalke, who had previously been at the bottom of the table, to eleventh place before resigning in February 2008 for health reasons. Boris Kaminski succeeded Beck. S04 managed to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, but after only four wins from 16 games, the team was again on the bottom of the table in the 2008/09 season, in January 2009 Kaminski was relieved of his office. Hubert Beck took up office again, the health problems that had forced him to resign about a year earlier had cured.

On March 23, 2009, FC Schalke 04 announced the withdrawal from the ProA. Together with the main club, the management of the basketball department had discovered that the team lacked perspective. For this reason, the team was refused an increase in the budget by the main club. Larger funds were required in order to be able to set up the minimum budget of 400,000 euros required by the league and to be able to lay a parquet floor in the home ground. The team was withdrawn to the 1st regional league.

In the Regionalliga season 2009/10 there was another coach change: After a series of defeats lasting over seven games, Beck resigned in December 2009, manager Boris Liebing temporarily took over the coaching duties together with players Benjamin Rust and Kevin Lehmann, before Bastian Scherkamp held the post until the end of the season and led the team to relegation. In May 2010 Peter Radegast was introduced as the new trainer. With the acquisition of Radegast, those responsible combined the hope of a "return of more successful times by the past" and looked at promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. However, Radegast canceled the Gelsenkirchen team six weeks later and thus before the start of the season in order to switch to the German Basketball Association . Schalke then hired the Canadian Chris Harris , who had previously worked for BBV Hagen in the regional league.

In the 2010/11 season, the Schalke basketball team won the WBV Cup: In the first final against Recklinghausen, the Harris team prevailed 74:65, although they lost the second leg 82:87, but were cup winners thanks to the better difference.

In the 2011/12 season, the "Royal Blues" aimed for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. After a weak first half of the season, the goal was changed to relegation. This was achieved through a good second half of the season, but due to the clear failure of the original promotion goal, Schalke separated from coach Harris at the end of the season. Heiko Skiba, who used to play for S04 in the 2nd Bundesliga and coached Schalke's second men's team in the Oberliga, was given the job. He led Schalke to fourth place in the 1st Regionalliga West in 2012/13, the following season 2013/14 the Knappen finished as runner-up behind the Iserlohn Kangaroos . After the season, the royal blues and Heiko Skiba parted amicably. On May 6, 2014 it was announced that Raphael Wilder will take over the coaching position at Schalke.

On July 1, 2014, the basketball department of SC Hassel joined FC Schalke 04.

On March 25, 2015, Schalke won the WBV Cup for the third time in the club's history. The team prevailed against Sechtem in the return game (93:62, 84:75). On March 6, 2016, Schalke managed to make their promotion to the ProB perfect two game days before the end of the season . After winning the championship, Schalke protagonists received personal honors: Raphael Wilder was named coach of the year in the 1st Regionalliga West by eurobasket.com and Patrick Carney was named player of the year.

In the 2017/18 season , Schalke reached the semi-finals of the ProB and was eliminated from the eventual champions Elchingen . Since the title holder did not apply for a license for the ProA, the promotion right went to Schalke. The best Schalke scorer in the promotion season was Courtney Belger with a point average of 16.5. Since there was no hall available in Gelsenkirchen that met the requirements of the league, the Schalke team decided to play their home games in the Willy-Jürissen-Halle in Oberhausen after their promotion to ProA .

In the 2018/19 season , the team secured the league with 14th place in the table. At the beginning of December 2019, coach Wilder was released with immediate effect, the reason for the decision was initially not communicated by the club. At the time of the split, S04 was in the middle of the ProA table. The new coach was Alexander Osipovitch , who had previously been Wilder's assistant. A few days after the separation, Schalke 04 stated "different views on the sporting direction" as the reason for separation. When the 2019/20 season was canceled in March 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , Schalke was 16th on a relegation place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, but the league suspended the relegation regulation due to the premature end of the season. The club had paid a lot of money for the basketball department in previous years, said the board member responsible for finances at FC Schalke 04, Peter Peters , in mid-April 2020. Since you can no longer afford a team in the ProA, you have determined not to apply for a license for the ProA, said Peters. Shortly thereafter, the head of the basketball department, Tobias Steinert, resigned after around nine years in office. The reasons given were different “views on the future direction”. The men's team was withdrawn to the league. The previous deputy Jan Fleischmann became the new department head in July 2020.

FC Schalke 04 Basketball Academy

The youth section of the Schalke basketball department has been called FC Schalke 04 Basketball Academy since 2016 . The aim of the Academy is to make the youth sector more professional, to participate in the NRW League for the individual teams, and to set up a JBBL team. On March 6, 2016 it was announced that FC Schalke 04 and Bundesliga club Phoenix Hagen will cooperate in the junior division.

In May 2019, FC Schalke 04 joined the “Metropol Baskets Ruhr” project, an amalgamation of associations in the Ruhr area to promote youth. When S04 started, ETB Schwarz-Weiß-Essen , Citybasket Recklinghausen , VfL AstroStars Bochum and, to a lesser extent, BSV Wulfen , Ruhrbaskets Witten and TC Sterkrade were already involved.
