The Wiha Panthers Schwenningen are a basketball team from the city of Villingen-Schwenningen . You are currently playing in the 2. Bundesliga ProA . The carrier is Basketball Villingen-Schwenningen GmbH.

history

The city of Villingen-Schwenningen already had a basketball department under the roof of the DJK Villingen in the 1980s. The actual nucleus of the association, however, is the KGJ Schwenningen (Klub Gradjana Yugoslawje), under whose roof young people initially began to play basketball. Later there was a merger with the basketball department of the DJK Villingen. Under the leadership of Alen Velčić (including TVG Trier ), a senior citizens' area was set up. The first team celebrated success from the start and rose for the first time in 1998. After promotion to the regional league in the following year, coach Velcic formulated the long-term goal of promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the following years the upswing continued, the American Sean Hampton was the defining player of this era. In the 2004/05 season, the team entered the Southwest / South Regionalliga for the first time as a preliminary highlight.

2004/05 season: first relegation round

KGJ Schwenningen was able to establish itself in the top field in the first regional league season and, after a tough struggle with MTV Stuttgart, won the main round in first place in the table. Together with Stuttgart, the Schwenninger basket hunters competed in the promotion round against the two representatives of the Regionalliga Südwest-Nord, MTV Kronberg and Tus Treis-Karden. The opening game against Kronberg could still be won in their own hall with 90:86, but this was followed by a debacle in Stuttgart and a home defeat against Treis-Karden. Due to the following away defeat, the KGJ finally had to bury their ambitions for promotion and ended the promotion round with 4: 8 points in third place and thus remained in the regional league.

Season 2005/06 - 2008/09: Establishment in the top group

In the following years the KGJ played consistently in the top group of the regional league, but could not land the big hit. Instead, competitors like VfL Kirchheim Knights managed to get promoted to the second Bundesliga. The years were mainly characterized by the sporting rivalry with TV Konstanz , MTV Stuttgart and BC Weißenhorn . In the 2005/06 season, the KGJ was in the running for the promotion round places, especially after an outstanding development player Sova Taletovic was committed. A defeat against Weißenhorn finally sealed the ambitions for promotion. Subsequently, the club separated from its long-time coach Alen Velcic. In the 2006/07 season, the KGJ finally went with player-coach Michael Heck . Under the new trainer, KGJ was able to qualify for the promotion round as second in the table, together with TV Konstanz, because the champions MTV Stuttgart did not participate. The opponents in the promotion round were Kronberg and BIS Baskets Speyer. The relegation was overshadowed by a tragic incident at the away game in Kronberg, when the Schwenningen winger Oscar Matongo suffered a heart attack on the field and died a little later in the Bad Homburg hospital. The jersey with the number 10 has not been awarded to the first team in Schwenningen since then.

In the following season 2007/08, the North and South squadrons were combined for the first time. With the establishment of Basketball Schwenningen GmbH, the first men's team was organizationally decoupled from the parent club KGJ Schwenningen. With Brandon Lee Adair an American was committed, who had put down a highly successful career in college. The team of coach Michael Heck continued to play in the front, but had to bow to the ASC Theresianum Mainz in the promotion battle. In the 2008/09 season, Oliver Narr was the coach of the basketball players now trading under the name work.id Panthers. After an initial phase of weakness, the Panthers increased and became the main competitor of BC Weissenhorn . In particular, the commitment of distance shooter Kai-Uwe Kranz turned out to be a stroke of luck. On December 13, 2008, the Panthers received the previously undefeated Weißenhorns in the sold-out Deutenberghalle and gave them their first defeat of the season at 88:75. By the end of the season, no team was able to break away significantly, so the decision to move up was made at the direct encounter on the last day of the match in Weißenhorn. Since Weißenhorn had lost in Konstanz on the match day, the Panthers went into the game as favorites. While their own fans were stuck in a traffic jam on the A8 autobahn, the well-prepared hosts pulled the Panthers' teeth from the start, so Weißenhorn made the ascent perfect with an 88:70.

Season 2009/2010: Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB

For the new season, the Panthers team has been greatly rejuvenated. The departures of top performers Marco Schlafke, Samba Thiam, Brandon Lee Adair, Russos Makris and Johannes Betz were compensated by the signing of the American Blake Young and the German perspective players Malte Kramer, Julian Sharma and Max Roser and the experienced playmaker Mac Dotzauer. After a defeat at the beginning of the season against VfB Gießen Pointers, the away win at local rivals Konstanz marked the start of a successful season. The young team continued to improve over the course of the season and was able to make the promotion perfect with an away win in Karlsruhe three game days before the end.

Season 2010/11 and 2011/12: ProB flying visit and crash into the 2nd regional league

A new name sponsor was acquired in the summer of 2010 with the company Wiha Werkzeuge . In terms of sport, the Schwenningen basketball players had to reorganize the squad again for the season in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB , this time involuntarily. Malte Kramer moved to college, Max Roser and Julian Sharma canceled for study-related reasons, and coach Oliver Narr also gave up the coaching position for time reasons. The Panthers did not have a good hand when it came to the squad, so they played against relegation from the start, and an early coaching change from Denis Zheltov to Sova Taletovic did not bring any improvement. The Panthers missed the playoffs by only one win, but had to face the second representation of Alba Berlin in the playdowns . This proved to be too strong with national player Lucca Staiger , among others , so that relegation to the regional league followed.

In the following season, coach Taletovic was trusted again, but the team was largely renewed. Here, too, the Panthers had to struggle with internal problems from the start, due to many departures and postings and two coach changes, the team could not come together. At the end of the season, the number of spectators fell to under 200 in some cases, and the team descended from bottom of the table without a sound.

Season 2012/13 and 2013/14: Consolidation and return to the 1st regional league

After the double relegation, the basketball project in Villingen-Schwenningen was facing an acid test. Club boss Frank Singer was able to convince Alen Velcic of a permanent return to the coaching chair, with Georgi Bujukliev an accomplished second coach. With Kristian Borisov a classic playmaker was signed, with Samba Thiam a figure of identification returned and with Mensah Taylor the position of the non-EU foreigner was filled with strong people. The team quickly inspired the fans again, so that the average attendance was increased to almost 500 spectators again. In the first year the promotion was gambled away due to a defeat in the top game against SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim. In the following year, the Panthers were able to prevail against the rivals SV Oberelchingen and TSG Schwäbisch Hall and celebrated the championship and promotion on the penultimate matchday with a 101:80 home win for the ratiopharm Akademie Ulm in front of almost 1000 spectators.

Season 2014/15: Establishment as a top team

For the 2014/15 season the team played again in the 1st regional league. With Mensah Taylor, the crowd favorite left the team. The king transfer was Semir Smajlovic, a Slovenian center who was most recently active at KK Rogaska. The season started promisingly with victories against the top teams ScanPlus Baskets Elchingen and SV 03 Tübingen. After defeats away from the top favorites KIT SC Karlsruhe and TSV Crailsheim, the series ended tied with Elchingen and Karlsruhe at the top of the table. Starting with a narrow defeat in Elchingen at the beginning, the Panthers could not build on the good first half of the season, so that in the end only third behind Elchingen and Tübingen, but at least ahead of Karlsruhe.

2015/16 season: runner-up

For the 2015/16 season, the squad was changed again for the first time. Dominating playmaker Dunovic left the club, as did wingers Damjanovic and Radmanovic and center Mosley. In contrast, primarily players who had already gained experience in Germany (Zurna, Ljoljic, Fekete), a Croatian junior national player born in Germany (Zovko) and a new professional from the US college league NCAA (Adams) were required. Boyko Pangarov Senior, an experienced assistant coach from Bulgaria, has been hired. The Schwenninger finished the season behind PS Karlsruhe as second in the table. Edin Alispahic was chosen by the internet service eurobasket.com as player of the year in the south-west relay of the 1st regional league. "With the runner-up title and the title decision only on the home straight, it was one of the most successful seasons in the club's history", was the balance sheet on the club's website.

Season 2016/17: winning the championship title, but no promotion

Alispahic as the outstanding man of the previous season and other top performers were retained. In the person of Jaka Zagorc, a strong development player returned who had already played in Schwenningen in the first half of the preseason, but then moved to his Slovenian homeland. Promotion was proclaimed as the goal for the 2016/17 season. With a 96:60 home win over Langen, the Schwenninger crowned themselves prematurely as champions of the 1st Regionalliga South-West in early March.

In view of the upcoming promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB and the fact that their master squad consisted largely of players from other EU countries, the Schwenninger considered legal action against the existing regulation on the use of foreign players in the league . This regulation stated that in the ProB at least three (in the ProA at least two) German players must be on the field at any time during the game. On the part of the Schwenninger Verein this regulation was described as an “openly illegal 'German quota'”. On May 11, 2017, the 2nd Bundesliga announced that Schwenninger had not received a license for the 2017/18 ProB season. The reason for this was a formal error. At the beginning of June 2017, Schwenningen announced that it would no longer pursue the proposed lawsuit against the foreigner regulations of the 2nd Bundesliga. "They refrained from filing a lawsuit in Villingen-Schwenningen and admitted that the threat was a mistake," wrote the Schwarzwälder Bote in an article in June 2017. Since ProB league player Lich decided to withdraw from the league, they searched Hesse found a buyer for their license, Schwenningen was also one of the interested parties, but ultimately the Lich cooperation partner, Bundesliga club Gießen 46ers , won the bid to send a second team into the ProB. This closed the last "back door" for Schwenningen to join the ProB despite the previous license refusal. Coach Velcic raised serious allegations against the league and the TV Lich and told the Neckarquelle in relation to league manager Daniel Müller: "We were too uncomfortable for him and therefore an example was made to us". The Panthers announced that they would start in the first regional league in the 2017/18 season as before.

2017/18 season: Champion again

For the season, winning the championship title again in the 1st Regionalliga Süd-West was given as the goal. Team captain Alispahic had left during the summer break, the new captain was Nikola Fekete. The intended defense of the championship title was achieved, coach Alen Velcic led his team to 27 wins in 28 games over the course of the year. The best scorer in the championship was the American Rasheed Moore with 21.7 points per game. After the new championship title, the Panthers received the license for the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga Pro B.

Season 2018/19: As a league newcomer to the semifinals and promotion

In the 2018/19 season, Schwenningen moved into the championship round of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB in the first year after being promoted to the table sixth in the southern season. In the round of 16 against SC Rist Wedel , the team prevailed in the third and decisive game away with 86:85. In the round of the last eight, Schwenningen met Gießen II . After two games it was 1: 1, in the third game Gießen had home rights, the guests from Schwenningen won the match 101: 100 after extra time and moved into the semi-finals. Here it came to a clash with Münster , the first seeded team from the northern relay. Again the decision was made in the third game. Schwenningen lost 83:86 and was eliminated in the semifinals. The club then announced that it wanted to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA. Semi-final opponent Münster had previously stated that they would not perceive a promotion. Rasheed Moore was the Schwenningen team's most successful thrower with 20.8 points per match during the season, followed by Bill Borekambi with 16.6 points per game. On May 10, 2019, the Schwenningers were granted the ProA license for the 2019/20 season.

2019/20 season: first year in the second division

The team entered the first second division game in 2019/20 with many new faces. In addition to the best offensive player Rasheed Moore, Bill Borekambi, Kosta Karamatskos, Leon Friederici and Sergej Tswetkow also stayed. Coach Velcic said he had newcomers who “did not have many clubs on the screen”. A budget of around 550,000 euros was set up for the first year of the second division, with the goal of reaching the final round of the championship. At the end of December 2019, the Schwenninger did not play their game against Tübingen in their traditional home, the Deutenberghalle, but moved to the Helios Arena as an exception . They won the encounter held in front of 4060 spectators with 72:65. The setting meant a new record number of spectators in the Schwenningen club's history. In the run-up to the game, the Schwenninger Wild Wings , who otherwise use the Helios Arena, had a dispute about sponsorship services in the hall. When the season ended prematurely due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , the team was in ninth place in the table with 14 wins and 14 defeats. The Schwenninger's best scorer in the 2019/20 season was Rasheed Moore (15.6 points / game) ahead of his compatriot Jaren Lewis (13 points / game).

Season 2020/21

During the 2020 summer break, the coaching staff was significantly expanded with Aleksandar Nađfeji as assistant to Alen Velčić. In terms of personnel, there was a change before the second Pro A season: Rasheed Moore, one of the decisive players of the previous years, switched to Bundesliga club Frankfurt. In addition, the top performers Leon Friederici , Drew Brandon and Jaren Lewis Schwenningen left. The new point guard was Nate Britt, who won the NCAA championship title in Division 1 with the University of North Carolina in his college days in 2017. In addition, Shaun Willett, Kevin Bryant , Chris Frazier , Rytis Pipiras, Jonas Niedermanner and Robin Jorch were signed .

In 2015, youth work was further professionalized and with Boyko Pangarov Senior, a full-time youth coach was hired, who is primarily intended to introduce young players to the regional league team. For the first time in 2015, the basketball club had two national selection players in the youth field, Daniel Zacek played in the extended group of the U16 national team. For summer 2017, the association is aiming for a further expansion of youth work with a second full-time trainer.
