Lucca Staiger (born June 14, 1988 in Blaustein ) is a German basketball player who played for the German series champion Brose Bamberg for three years and won the German championship twice with them . Since December 2019 he has been under contract with the Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig .
Career
Staiger came to the basketball boarding school at the Urspring School at the age of eleven and was supported there by Ralph Junge . In January 2004 he scored 102 points (including 14 successful three-point throws) in a U16 youth game with the team from the Urspring School against VfL Waiblingen. At the age of 15 he made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga for TSG Ehingen . In spring 2004 Staiger became German U16 champions with the Urspring School.
In the 2006/07 season, Staiger played for Decatur Christian High School in the US state of Illinois .
He then moved to Iowa State University in 2007 , where he wanted to get closer to his dream of one day playing in the NBA .
On November 19, 2009, the 1.95 m and 95 kg shooting guard was not only able to achieve his new personal best of 32 points in one game, but also set a new record for Iowa State University with ten successful three-point throws in one game on.
In 2009, national basketball coach Dirk Bauermann became aware of Staiger and nominated him for the 2009 European Basketball Championship in Poland . In a group match against Macedonia on September 13, 2009, Staiger even advanced to the top scorer of the German national team with 14 points .
In January 2010 Staiger left the Iowa State team surprisingly to accept an offer from Germany. Shortly afterwards, Alba Berlin announced Staiger's commitment. Lucca Staiger signed a 2.5-year contract with the Berliners until the end of the 2011/2012 season. On June 19, 2010 Staiger was also appointed to the extended squad of the German national team for the 2010 World Cup in Turkey .
After Staiger did not get beyond the status of supplementary player in Berlin, he left the club after his contract expired in the summer of 2012 and signed a two-year contract with the Neckar Giants Ludwigsburg . Staiger became a top performer at the Neckar Giants and was on the field for an average of 31 minutes per game in the 2012/13 season. After the season he used the exit option in his contract and moved to FC Bayern Munich , with whom he became German champion in the 2013/14 season .
In the summer of 2015 Staiger was signed by Brose Bamberg . With the Upper Franconia he became German champion in 2016 and in 2017 he even managed the double of championship and cup victory . He competed three times in a row with the Upper Franconia in the highest European club competition, the EuroLeague , and advanced from beyond the three-point line to the public's favorite in Bamberg due to his impressive accuracy . After three years in Bamberg, his contract expired in June 2018.
For the 2018/19 season, Staiger moved to the Spanish first division club CB Canarias. In 32 league games he came to a point average of 5.1 per game for the team. After the end of the 2018/19 season, Staiger initially remained without a club. In mid-December 2019, he signed with the Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig .
