Team Ehingen Urspring (actually: Team Ehingen / Urspringschule eV ) is a game community made up of the basketball department of TSG Ehingen von 1848 eV and the basketball academy of the Urspring School in Schelklingen .

history

Under player- coach Rolf Koch , who had previously played in the basketball league and came to the city of Ehingen (Danube) for professional reasons , TSG Ehingen rose between 1998 and 2001 from the district to the state league and then to the top division on. In 2001, Felix Czerny and Christian Grosse played two talents from the Urspring School for the first time by means of double licenses for Ehingen. In 1998 Ralph Junge set up a basketball branch at the boarding school of the Urspring School and also led the team from the SG Urspring School / Schelklingen to the top league.

Ehingen and Urspringschule / Schelklingen were among the top league teams in the 2001/02 season. During the course of the season, Koch and Junge agreed to work together. In order to help Ehingen move up to the regional league, Hendrik Feist and Vincent Polakovič, other young players from Ursprings, moved to Ehingen at the end of 2002. The goal was achieved: Ehingen rose as champions in the regional league in spring 2002, the team from the Urspring School / Schelklingen came second. From 2002 Ralph Junge took over the coaching position in Ehingen, after he had already temporarily held it in several games in the Regionalliga promotion season. Koch stayed with the team as an experienced player and as assistant coach.

In the 2002/03 season, Ehingen managed to "march straight through" in the regional league, so that the team was promoted to the 2nd basketball league. During the season, in addition to numerous young talent who had emerged from the Urspring School, the squad also included a few experienced players and, for a time, the American Vince Ford.

The nickname Steeples is supposed to remind of the church towers of the city of Ehingen. The focus is on training young players.

With the introduction of the hierarchical seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga, they first played in the third-class 2nd Bundesliga ProB , before being promoted to the higher class 2nd Bundesliga ProA as the 2010/11 ProB champion .

In May 2014, Ralph Junge left the team and went to Nuremberg BC . He had worked as head coach in Ehingen for the previous 14 years and established the cooperation with the Urspring School, where he set up the basketball boarding school.

The young successor to the coaching position was Michael Spöcker, who was unable to prevent his relegation from the ProA in the 2014/15 season and then handed over the office to Domenik Reinboth . Until the descent from ProA 2015 , the first men's team operated under the name sponsor Erdgas Südwest and then as Team Ehingen Urspring. Reinboth led the team to win the ProB championship title in the 2015/16 season and thus to a direct return to the ProA. There in the season 2016/17 the league was managed as 14th in the point round.

For the 2017/18 season, the hall of the Johann-Vanotti-Gymnasium replaced the Längenfeldhalle as the venue for the home games.

The game year ended as penultimate in the table, so after two years of membership in the second highest German league, relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB was certain. However, since Cologne announced its withdrawal into the ProB and was subsequently placed at the bottom of the table, the Ehinger remained in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA.

In the 2018/19 season, the team moved into the championship round of the ProA as seventh in the table. There they were eliminated with 3-0 wins against Heidelberg. In the 2019/20 season, the team was in last place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA table with four wins and 23 defeats when the season was canceled due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus . Due to the early end of the season, the league management decided to override the relegation regulation.

youth

concept

The transition between the youth teams and the men's team is fluid. The talents get match practice in several teams: In the youth area in the JBBL and / or NBBL, in the men's area at the TuS Urspring School (regional league) and / or in the first men's team. The older players and top performers in the youth team make up a large proportion of the men's squad. This is supplemented by experienced and foreign players in order to be competitive on the level. Numerous graduates of the youth development concept have received sports scholarships for universities in the United States over the years, including Lucca Staiger , Jermain Raffington , Fabian Böke , Christian Standhardinger and many others. But there were some problems: Staiger was not granted a license to play by the NCAA for his first season in the USA because he had teammates in Ehingen who received financial benefits for their work as a basketball player that were not compatible with the rules of the NCAA.

Until 2014, Ralph Junge was the head coach and sporting director of the Ehingen / Urspring School as a whole, his successor as director of the basketball academy was Nico Drmota .

Since the introduction of the youth basketball league (NBBL) in 2006, the youngsters have been playing under different names ( CYBEX Urspring , Team ALBA Urspring, Team Urspring) in the U19 Bundesliga, the top German division in competitive youth sports. The players are students from the Urspring School . This is a private boarding school with a grammar school in Schelklingen in the Alb-Donau district . The basketball branch was officially named a base by the German Basketball Federation in 2003 . The self-imposed goal is the targeted training of young players who, in addition to their athletic support, should also receive a basis for a professional future. "They should have an academic framework on which they can build professionally, regardless of how their basketball career goes", wrote spox.com in 2014 in the article "Talent factory behind monastery walls" about the basketball talents at the Urspring School. In terms of sport, the comparison at federal level is not sufficient, according to the academy's concept: “Germany alone is not the benchmark, but international top-class youngsters. For this purpose, the players and the team must be given the opportunity to take part in the best tournaments worldwide. ”The teams from the Urspring School took part in several tournaments in the USA and China and carried out competitive trips with games against local teams.

Some of the youth teams had their own name sponsors . After the Berlin waste disposal company ALBA Group was previously a sponsor, it was later the Bayreuth toddler outfitter "CYBEX".

Sports development NBBL

In 2006, the youth basketball league (NBBL) was introduced for U19 teams. The U19 team from the Urspring School became group first in the NBBL's southern relay in the year it was founded in 2006/2007. In the round of 16 of the play-offs , the Franconian Witcher were defeated and in the quarter-finals of TV Langen . At the final tournament in Paderborn, the championship was won after victories against the Bonn / Rhöndorf team and in the final against the Phoenix Hagen Juniors . In the 2007/2008 season, the first place in the relay was defended and after play-off victories against the BBLZ Mittelhessen and MTV Kronberg, qualification for the final tournament in Langen was achieved. In the final of the German championship, the youngsters were defeated by Alba Berlin . Originally Christian Standhardinger was also named the best player of the 2007/08 NBBL season.

In 2009 the team from the Urspring School was eliminated in the play-off semifinals against Paderborn , and in 2010 they became NBBL champions for the third time by winning the final over Alba Berlin. The fourth title followed in 2011: In the final, the team from Urspring beat TSV Breitengüßbach . In 2012 they had to admit defeat in the semifinals, a year later the boarding school students were given gold medals again: They won the final of the German U19 championship against Breitengüßbach. In 2014 they were again in the NBBL final, but lost to Alba Berlin.

Sports development JBBL

With the introduction of the youth basketball league (JBBL) in the U16 age range, a team from Ursprings also started in this youth performance division. In the first season of 2009/10 they came under the best four teams in Germany, losing in the semifinals to IBBA Berlin. Originals Malik Müller was named JBBL Player of the Year in the first season. The following year they won the German championship title thanks to a final victory over Ludwigsburg.

Other events in the youth sector

The male U16 team at the Urspring School won the German championship in 2004, the U18 team won the German championship title in 2005, and in 2007 and 2009 they won the German Youth Cup in the U18 (male) age group.

In 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2011, the Urspring School won the national competition "Youth trains for the Olympics" in male competition class II (14 to 17 year olds).

In 2012, the selection of the Urspring School won the “Arby's Classic”, a tournament in Bristol in the US state of Tennessee . The boarding school students were the first foreign team to win the event, which has been held since 1982, and Malik Müller was also named the best player of the tournament. In 2010 the tournament was finished second.
