Akeem David Vargas (born April 29, 1990 in Lancaster , Pennsylvania ) is an American - German basketball player . He is under contract with the BG Göttingen .

The son of a German mother grew up in Germany and attended the popular basketball boarding school at the Urspring School . After a short study trip to his native country, Vargas turned pro in 2010 and initially played for the Walter Tigers Tübingen in the basketball league . After changing clubs in 2012, he was elected “Youngster of the Year” for the BG 74 Göttingen in the ProA 2012/13 . Then the former junior international got a contract with the first division club Alba Berlin, later he moved to Frankfurt.

Career

Vargas learned to play basketball at KuSG Leimen , where he played in all youth teams until 2006. In the 2006 season he moved to the Urspring School in Schelklingen , where he played for their youth team in the youth basketball league (NBBL). With this team he won the NBBL championship title in the first two events, including the 2008 final against the youngsters from ALBA Berlin. In 2009 the defending champion lost the semi-finals against the offspring of the Paderborn Baskets , who in turn lost the final against hosts ALBA. Vargas, who had been playing in the first men's team of cooperation partner erdgas Ehingen in the third-highest German division ProB since 2006 , then went to study in his native country. However , he was denied a license to play in the NCAA , as his assignments in the ProB were considered a professional activity according to the NCAA organization's view at the time. However, Vargas got a license to play for the "National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association" (NJCAA), an organization for sports teams from "Community Colleges". Here Vargas played for the Lakers of the Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg . After the suspension from the NCAA expired, Vargas decided to break off his academic career and return to Germany.

In 2010 Vargas signed a professional contract with the German first division club Walter Tigers from Tübingen . With a double license , Vargas was allowed to continue to work for the Ehingen Steeples in the ProB . With the Tübingen people themselves, Vargas only had little time on the job. In the basketball Bundesliga 2011/12 he averaged almost eight minutes playing time in ten appearances. With the hangers, however, Vargas managed the championship of this division in the ProB 2010/11 and promotion to the second highest division ProA . In the ProA 2011/12 , Vargas then safely reached relegation with the promoted team, and he himself was honored as “Youngster of the Month” in December 2011 in this division. After two years his contract in Tübingen ended and he moved to the first division relegated BG 74 from Göttingen . In the ProA 2012/13 they reached second place after the main round, but then dropped out somewhat surprisingly in the first round of the play-offs for promotion against Science City Jena . Vargas himself was named Youngster of the Month in both October 2012 and January 2013 and was also named Youngster of the Year by the ProA at the end of the season. Then Vargas signed a contract with former German champions Alba Berlin in the first division. In 2014 and 2016, Vargas won the cup competition with the capitals. In five years in Berlin he played 203 Bundesliga games for the team, the best point average of his Alba time he achieved in the 2014/15 game year when he recorded 5.5 points per game.

During the 2018 summer break, the Skyliners Frankfurt announced  Vargas' commitment. After two years in Frankfurt, the player, known as a specialist in defense tasks, returned to the BG Göttingen .
