The BG Göttingen is a basketball team from Göttingen . For the first time in the 1st basketball league they played from 2007 to 2012. After a two-year break, they rose back to the basketball league for the 2014/15 season . The current license holder is Pro Basketball GmbH .

history

With the promotion of the BG 74 Göttingen to the Bundesliga in 2007, the decision was made to spin off the Bundesliga team from the parent club and the license was transferred to the newly founded Starting Five GmbH . Under the name BG Göttingen, they competed in the basketball Bundesliga for the first time in the 2007/2008 season and secured the important league on matchday 30 with a 69:67 win in Bonn .

Before the 2008/09 season there were many changes within the team and players on the promotion team had to leave the club. However, playmaker Kyle Bailey returned after a one-year commitment at Ratiopharm Ulm . After two defeats at the beginning of the season against Trier and Braunschweig, the team managed a long winning streak that led to the first league lead in the Bundesliga. They finished the main round as runner-up and then had to play in the play-offs against Brose Baskets Bamberg . Among other things, due to the injuries of the players Kyle Bailey and Charles Lee , they quickly retired with one win against three defeats. For the team's surprising success of finishing second in the second season, John Patrick was rewarded with the Coach of the Year award at the end of the season .

Trophy of the EuroChallenge, which the BG 2010 won.

From March 6, 2009 to January 2010, the club acted as MEG Göttingen, named after an insurance distributor from Kassel ( MEG AG ). However, since MEG AG became insolvent during the season , they returned to their previous name and ended the season as BG Göttingen. Despite quarrels about the name sponsor, the team of the BG Göttingen was able to achieve good results in three competitions. In April the team competed in the Top Four tournament for the German Cup in the Frankfurt Ball Sports Hall , but had to admit defeat in the semifinals and also lost the game for 3rd place against the Eisbären Bremerhaven with 90:65. After finishing the regular playing time of the Bundesliga season in third place in the table, the Eisbären from Bremerhaven were faced again in the first round of the playoffs. In the best-of-five game format, a fifth game in the Lokhalle Göttingen had to bring the decision after the respective home team had prevailed in the first four games. Although the BG was close to reaching the semi-finals with a 12-point lead five minutes before the end of the game, the polar bears had the happier end for themselves. After a strong race to catch up, Andrew Drevo from Bremerhaven scored 79:78 with the final siren, so that, as in the previous year, BG Göttingen had to admit defeat in the first round of the playoffs despite home rights. In the same season, however, the BG Göttingen also achieved its greatest club success: For the first time, the BG took part in an international competition, the EuroChallenge . After surprising successes in the preliminary and intermediate rounds, she finally qualified for the Final Four tournament. You applied to host the tournament, which was successful, so you had the home advantage in the Lokhalle . After BG was able to turn a semi-final match against Chorale Roanne (France) after a long deficit, the Veilchen also won the final with 83:75 against the Russian club Krasnye Krylja . After the Mitteldeutscher BC and ALBA Berlin, they are the third German team to win a European basketball cup.

The 2010/2011 season was almost as successful as the previous one. In the BBL they finished 7th after the main round with 53 points (19 wins, 15 defeats). In the quarter-finals that followed against Deutsche Bank Skyliners, without a real home game (the only “home game” had to be played in Kassel for scheduling reasons) without a win from three games. As last season's Eurochallenge winner, you qualified for the European Eurocup 2010/11 competition this season . After successfully mastering the group phase and the round of the last 16 teams, they faced Benetton Basket Bwin (today: PallacanestroTreviso ) in the quarterfinals . The home game ended with a 66:66, which is unusual for basketball. In Treviso there was nothing to win against a team packed with top players ( Devin Smith , Stefan Marković, Hrvoje Perić, Greg Brunner, Brian Skinner, Donatas Motiejūnas and Alessandro Gentile) and the 84:62 defeat sealed the end of the Eurocup 2010 / 2011.

After the 2010/2011 season, successful coach John Patrick moved to the newly promoted S.Oliver Baskets . Several players from the 2010/2011 squad followed their head coach to Würzburg, so that a complete change took place. Former assistant coach Stefan Mienack became the new head coach . He was joined by experienced Michael Meeks , who ended his active time at the BG Göttingen and switched to the coaching staff. In addition, the venue was changed, and the locomotive hall (until now affectionately known by Veilchen fans as "Lok-Hölle") was moved to the new Sparkassen Arena. With the upheaval, the 2011/2012 season fell short of expectations, especially in terms of sport. After the 10th matchday they were in last place with 2:18 points. The consequence was that head coach Stefan Mienack had to resign at the beginning of December 2011 and assistant coach Michael Meeks took over his post. Sports director Jan Schiecke took over the position of assistant coach . But even the new coaching team was unable to provide any successful impetus despite a few layoffs and additional commitments and they ended the 2011/2012 season with 8:60 points as bottom of the table, which meant relegation from the House of Lords. The appearances of the BG Göttingen on the international stage were equally unsuccessful. Having entered the Eurochallenge again, the violets could not build on their past successes and left the competition without a win after the group stage.

Since relegation from the BBL and the insolvency of Starting Five GmbH in 2012, the professional team has been running under the license of Pro Basketball Göttingen GmbH . The BG entered the ProA season 2012/2013 with a significantly changed line-up and under the new coach Johan Roijakkers . The team finished the main round in second place on the table and qualified for the upcoming play-offs in spring 2013. In the first round, the violets met Science City Jena . There Göttingen was eliminated in the first round against Jena.

In 2013/2014 the BG Göttingen was able to establish itself in the top group of the ProA and finished the season with 26 wins and four defeats in first place in the table. In the play-offs, head coach Johan Roijakkers' team initially prevailed against ETB Wohnbau Baskets Essen in the quarter-finals . The opponent in the semi-finals was the former Bundesliga club Gießen 46ers . The series against Gießen was also won by the BG and returned to the basketball Bundesliga by moving into the ProA final for the 2014/2015 season .

In the first season after promotion (2014/15) they achieved relegation as tenth in the Bundesliga points round. In the 2015/16 season, the "Veilchen" barely missed relegation and took 16th place (relegated Mitteldeutscher BC had an identical season record with nine wins and 25 defeats).

The 2017/2018 season ended with the BG Göttingen in 14th place. In the summer of 2020, Roijakker's tenure ended after eight years. The Dutchman accepted an offer from Bundesliga competitor Brose Bamberg , in return the previous Bamberg coach Roel Moors moved to Göttingen.

Venue

BG Göttingen against EWE Baskets Oldenburg on November 16, 2007 in the Lokhalle

After advancing to the BBL in 2007, the 1st men's team moved to the Lokhalle Göttingen , which holds 3700 spectators and is laid out in the parquet floor. Since the 2011/12 season, the men's team has played most of its home games in the newly built Sparkassen-Arena on Schützenplatz, but continues to play individual games in the Lokhalle. The Sparkassen-Arena is designed as a combination sports hall and offers space for 3447 people. At the time when the Sparkassen-Arena did not yet exist and the locomotive hall was occupied, but a game had to take place, the company moved twice to the Rothenbach-Halle in Kassel and once to the Volkswagen Halle in Braunschweig .

Fan scene

Since November 11, 2006, the BG has had its first fan club. Eight members founded it with the name "Veilchen-Power". Currently (July 2015) the fan club has 210 members. Mainly the fans organized in the fan club follow the games of the first division men, but there are also people who follow the remaining games of the home club, for example the women. In addition, a second fan club called “BG Bambule” developed from the fan scene. At the end of 2010, another fan club, the Veilchen Supporters, was founded. In the 2007/08 season, the men had an average attendance of 2975, in 2008/09 it was 3132. Both values are in the middle of the league. In the 2012/2013 season, the average attendance was 2,132. This is by far the highest average attendance in the 2nd Bundesliga. The average of the 2nd basketball league in 2012/2013 was 1262 spectators. In the 2013/14 season, the average attendance was 2526, which corresponds to an increase of 18.5 percent. This is also clearly the best value in the 2nd division. In the 2017/18 Bundesliga season, the average attendance was 3,162 (as of March 15, 2018).

The fans of the Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt have been friends since 2010.
