Michael Meeks (born February 23, 1972 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a former Canadian basketball player and current basketball coach, who has also had German citizenship for several years .

college

Meeks played at college in Buffalo and was one of the most successful point collectors in the history of Canisius College . In his senior year in college, Meeks won the championship of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference , where Meeks was named Most Valuable Player of the final tournament, and he qualified with the team for the NCAA finals in college history for the first time since the fifties. For his achievements, he was appointed to the "Sports Hall of Fame" ( German  : Hall of Fame of Sports ) of his college at the end of 2006 .

Despite his good performance at college, he was not included in the 1996 NBA Draft and thus shares the fate of the future NBA All-Star Ben Wallace . In this draft there was particularly strong competition, in addition to his compatriot Steve Nash , nine other All-Stars were selected for this year.

Europe

In addition to the Spanish ACB league and the Greek A1 Ethniki , Meeks has played several of the more important European basketball leagues during his career. His first position in the German Bundesliga was Brandt Hagen in the 1997/98 season . The club had to file for bankruptcy six years later . His former Italian club Fabriano Basket 2008 suffered a similar fate later . In the 2005/06 season , Telekom Baskets Bonn was his second German station, where he was named the new team captain. The inglorious highlight of his year in Bonn was an unsportsmanlike foul on Bamberg's Uvis Helmanis in a heated play-off quarter-final, which earned him six games suspension at the end of his time in Bonn. In November 2009 Meeks received a three-month contract with Bundesliga club BG Göttingen at the age of 37, which was then extended to the end of the season. In mid-November 2010 he returned to the BG Göttingen after initially not receiving a new contract for the 2010/2011 season. As a veteran, he should help guide the young team through the season.

Coaching career

For the 2011/2012 season, Meeks ended his playing career and became assistant coach at his previous club, BG Göttingen. After a weak start to the season, Meeks succeeded Stefan Mienack as head coach of the BG Göttingen. But even under Meeks, the descent could not be prevented. After it was unclear for a long time whether the Göttingen team could compete in Pro A due to financial problems in 2012/2013 , the club and the league gave the green light in June 2012. In order to initiate a complete restart, the Göttingen decided to sign a new coach in the second division and not to continue to work with Meeks.

Michael Meeks then became the new assistant coach of the s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg. He initially received a contract there until 2013, which was extended in summer 2013 to 2014. In November 2013, Meeks was promoted to interim head coach after Marcel Schröder was fired after a weak start to the season. After relegation in 2014, Meeks did not receive a new contract as assistant coach in Würzburg for the 2014/2015 season.

He returned to Canada and became responsible for the youth national teams of the Canadian Basketball Federation.

National team

Michael Meeks played for the Canadian national team for several years. In the finals, he took part in the American Basketball Championships in 1995, 1997, 1999 (silver) & 2001 (bronze), the 1998 and 2002 World Basketball Championships and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney .
