The Telekom Baskets Bonn is a German basketball -Verein. With eight finals (championship and cup) in 20 years of membership in the Basketball Bundesliga , the Baskets are among the most successful teams in Germany.

history

The beginnings

The roots of the Bonn team lie with two clubs: the basketball department of the Godesberger Turnverein 1888 eV, founded in 1970, and the SC Fortuna Bonn, founded in 1973 . Godesberger TV was promoted to the 2nd basketball division in 1988, and in 1990 was promoted to the 1st division. The descent in the following year and the associated economic problems finally led to the merger of the basketball departments of the two clubs in 1992 to form BG Bonn 92 . In the following year, the game operations switched to Post-SV Bonn, and Deutsche Telekom took over sponsorship of post sports.

Promotion to the 1st Bundesliga and runner-up: The Socé era (1995 to 2001)

Telekom Baskets Bonn was founded in April 1995, with promotion to the Bundesliga in 1997 as a goal. But as early as the 1995/96 season, the undefeated first in the 2nd Bundesliga Group North was promoted to the 1st Basketball Bundesliga.

For the 1996/97 season , the Baskets moved as a guest to the newly built Hardtberghalle in the Hardtberg school center. The first season in the first Bundesliga ended the team of coach Bruno Socé in the seventh main round rank. In the playoffs, the Baskets were able to prevail against their local rivals from Rhöndorf and then against TTL uniVersa Bamberg . This made them the first to be promoted in the history of the basketball Bundesliga in their debut season in the final of the German championship. However, the Baskets had to admit defeat 1: 3 against Alba Berlin in the final series . In the following season ( 1997/98 ) the Baskets played for the first time in an international competition, the Korać Cup . After reaching the second main round in the basketball league, the baskets were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. In the 1998/99 season the final match was again Bonn against Berlin. This time too, Bonn had to admit defeat (2: 3), but they celebrated the second runner-up in their third season of membership in the first division. A highlight of the 1999/2000 season was the home game against Alba Berlin, which was played in front of 18,506 spectators in the Kölnarena , a new record for basketball in Europe at the time. The final pairing of the 2000/01 season was again Bonn against Berlin and for the third time Bonn had to admit defeat in the final (0: 3). At the end of the season, coach Bruno Socé left the club.

End of the line semifinals: The Krunić Era (2001 to 2005)

Oluoma Nnamaka , Bonn from 2002 to 2005

For the 2001/02 season , Predrag Krunić took over the post of head coach after having been assistant coach under Bruno Socé since 1998. The team was able to reach the semi-finals of the playoffs, as well as in the two following seasons ( 2002/03 and 2003/04 ). After five defeats in the last seven games of the 2004/05 season , the Telekom Baskets missed the leap into the championship round for the first time since promotion, despite a positive record (16 wins, 14 defeats), whereupon Krunić released his duties has been. The only bright spot of the season was reaching the final of the League Cup for the first time . Formative players of the Krunić era included Aleksandar Nađfeji , Terrence Rencher , Aleksandar Ćapin , Rimantas Kaukėnas ( All-Star Game MVP 2003/04 ) and Oluoma Nnamaka .

From 1998 to 2002 the Baskets had signed a cooperation agreement with SG Sechtem . This cooperation was discontinued in 2002 due to a new sporting orientation of both clubs.

Relocation to the Telekom Dome: The Koch era (2005 to 2013)

Jared Jordan was the best passer of the baskets both nationally and internationally.

In December 2005, former national player Michael "Mike" Koch became the new coach of the Baskets. Before that, Croatian Danijel Jusup was a trainer in Bonn for a few months.

In 2008 the baskets moved from their previous venue, the Hardtberghalle , to the newly built Telekom Dome . Telekom Baskets was the first basketball club in Germany to have its own arena with an attached training center. The Baskets also intensified the training of their own youth players and have been cooperating with their former rivals Dragons Rhöndorf since the 2006/2007 season . Under the name SG Bonn / Rhöndorf , both clubs send teams to the start in various youth leagues. In the future, more players from their own offspring should make the leap into the first team. The first successes are the players Fabian Thülig and Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann . Under coach Mike Koch, the Baskets made it to the final of the basketball Bundesliga in both 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. There the Baskets had to admit defeat to Alba Berlin and EWE Baskets Oldenburg . The 2010/2011 season, on the other hand, was the weakest season since the rise of Telekom Baskets. With only 14 wins and 20 defeats, the Bonn team ended the season in 13th place and missed the playoffs for the second time in their club's history.

For the 2011/2012 season, Mike Koch remained head coach of Telekom Baskets and rebuilt the squad. With Jared Jordan , a former player returned and led the team around the other newcomers Benas Veikalas , Tony Gaffney , Talor Battle , Daniel Hain and Andrej Mangold to the eighth main rank after an eventful season with 18 wins and 16 losses. In the quarter-finals of the playoffs, the Bonn team lost 3-1 to defending champions Brose Baskets Bamberg in four games . In the cup, the baskets reached the final in their own hall and were also defeated there by the baskets from Bamberg.

In 2012/2013 the Bonn team was able to qualify for the playoffs again. Overall, the team finished the season in seventh place in the main round. During the season the team was forward Jamel McLean added that Patrick Ewing Jr. replaced. In the quarter-finals, the Baskets faced EWE Baskets Oldenburg . Against Oldenburg, the Baskets were eliminated with 2: 3 wins after five games. After the season, coach Michael Koch's contract was not renewed, so the Koch era ended after eight years as a coach at Telekom Baskets Bonn. At the time of leaving the club, Koch was the longest-serving coach in the basketball division.

New sporting dual leadership and sporting crisis (2013 to 2016)

Eugene Lawrence replaced Jared Jordan as Point Guard for Telekom Baskets in 2013/2014

As the successor to Michael Koch, Telekom Baskets Bonn presented Mathias Fischer in May 2013 , who previously worked for the LTi Gießen 46ers and youth selection programs of the DBB. Under his leadership, the youth promotion in cooperation with the Dragons Rhöndorf should receive new impulses and be further expanded. In addition to Fischer, the Baskets also presented a new full-time sports manager. With Michael Wichterich , a former player of Godesberger TV and Dragons Rhöndorf also took over this position. Wichterich previously worked in a similar position at the Dragons in Rhöndorf and has only been the club's second full-time manager since Arvid Kramer left in 2004. The previous manager Andreas Boettcher continued to be involved in the management in a new role. The season was successful in terms of sport. The team qualified early for the playoffs and finished the regular season in fifth place in the table. As in the previous year, the Baskets faced EWE Baskets Oldenburg in the subsequent playoffs . After five games, Telekom Baskets were eliminated with 2: 3 wins. Internationally, the Bonn team could not move into the second round of the ULEB Eurocup with five wins and five defeats .

For the 2014/15 season, the baskets repositioned themselves on the center position through the engagement of Tadas Klimavičius and Dirk Mädrich . In addition, Angelo Caloiaro, a new power forward from Central German BC, joined the team. Internationally, the baskets could not survive the group stage of the ULEB Eurocup with 3 wins and 9 losses . In the Bundesliga, fourth place in the main round was achieved with 23 wins and eleven defeats, and with it the home right in the playoff quarter-finals. There the Baskets met Ratiopharm Ulm and had to admit defeat to head coach Thorsten Leibenath's team after five games with 2: 3 wins. This was the fourth time in a row that Telekom Baskets were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the playoffs. After the season, coach Mathias Fischer extended his contract until summer 2017.

Guard Josh Mayo was a formative figure in Bonn basketball from 2016 to 2019

US forward Aaron White and shooting guard Rotnei Clarke joined the Bonn squad as well-known new signings in the 2015/16 season. Initially, the Baskets started the season well with seven wins from their first nine games. In November 2015, however, a sporting crisis began. After a series of 14 consecutive defeats across all competitions, head coach Mathias Fischer was relieved of his duties and the sporting director Carsten Pohl initially took over the post of head coach. On March 3, 2016, the Baskets presented a new head coach with Silvano Poropat at an early stage, who took over the post of head coach from Pohl with immediate effect in order to finally secure relegation and to set the course for the coming season. Poropat received a contract until the end of the 2016/17 season. The main round of the 2015/16 season ended with the Telekom Baskets in eleventh place, which was the third time in the club's history that they missed the playoffs.

Rebuilding with an old friend (2016 to January 2019)

Telekom Baskets Bonn prepared for the 2016/17 season with a completely new team, but had to cope with the health-related resignation of their head coach Silvano Poropat 3 days before the start of the season . As his successor, the former Bonn head coach Predrag Krunić was presented, who had already worked as head coach in Bonn from 2001 to 2005. Krunic received a contract until 2017. Under Krunic, Telekom Baskets played a solid season and, after the disappointing 2015/2016 season, were able to build on their old successes and qualify for the quarter-finals of the playoffs. There they were eliminated with 1: 3 against defending champion Brose Bamberg . In 2017/2018, Telekom Baskets, under the sporting direction of Predrag Krunic, made it into the playoffs with a record of 21 wins and 13 defeats, where it came to a duel with defending champion Bamberg in the quarter-finals. This time too, the Baskets did not make it to the semi-finals and were eliminated 3-0 against Bamberg.

After changing performances in the course of the 2018/2019 season, Telekom Baskets Bonn head coach Predrag Krunic took a leave of absence in January 2019. At that time, the Baskets were outside the playoffs with a negative balance and had previously suffered two defeats on the international stage. As an interim coach, the previous assistant coach Chris O'Shea took over Krunic's duties. After a good performance by the team under the direction of O'Shea, he was promoted to permanent head coach of Telekom Baskets Bonn, leading the Bonn team into the Bundesliga finals as seventh in the table. At the end of the 2018/19 season, however, the US-American returned to his position as assistant coach and made room for Thomas Päch , who moved from Berlin to Bonn and became the new head coach.

After the 17th matchday of the 2019/20 season, Thomas Päch, who was only signed at the beginning of the season, was released on February 2, 2020 after a 66:85 defeat in Crailsheim. At this point in time the Baskets were in 16th and penultimate place in the table with only six points. The following away game in the Basketball Champions League against PAOK Thessaloniki was then played under the direction of assistant coach Chris O'Shea. A new head coach was hired for the next league game. Päch's successor was the 43-year-old American William "Will" Voigt . Voigt qualified with the Angolan national basketball team for the 2019 Basketball World Cup . The end of June 2020, it occurs with Angola in Kaunas for the qualifying tournament for the Olympics on. In the meantime he signed a contract with the Bonners until the end of the season. At the time the 2019/20 season was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19 , the team was in 13th place in the table (four wins, 16 defeats), and the team did not take part in the Bundesliga season final tournament in June 2020. In the summer of 2020, Voigt and the Bonners parted ways. The new coach was Igor Jovović , who previously worked as an assistant coach at FC Bayern Munich (basketball) and as head coach already looked after the Central German BC in the basketball league.

Attendance record

For almost nine years, Telekom Baskets Bonn held the European indoor record for the largest number of spectators in a regular game. On April 7, 2000 , 18,605 spectators came to the Bundesliga basketball game against Alba Berlin, which was moved to the Kölnarena in Cologne . The record was only exceeded on March 5, 2009 in the Euroleague game Partizan Belgrade against Panathinaikos with 22,567 spectators.

Junior program

With the construction of the Telekom Dome , the Baskets have also intensified their youth work and, together with their cooperation partner Dragons Rhöndorf, offer a consistent system for young players for personal and sporting development. This includes a wide range of teams to offer optimal conditions for athletic development. With Fabian Thülig , Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann and Florian Koch , three players from their own youth have made it into the 1st Bundesliga so far. Before that, all three also played for the Dragons Rhöndorf in Pro A and Pro B respectively . With Viktor Frankl-Maus, Alexander Möller and Yannick Kneesch, three young talents are currently being introduced to the 1st Bundesliga through the cooperation program.

The head of the junior program is Olaf Stolz , who was head coach of the Dragons Rhöndorf from 2007 to 2009. He has been working in various functions in the Telekom Baskets Bonn program since 2012 and is currently responsible for the conceptual orientation of the entire range of services as sports director. All training takes place in the Telekom Baskets training center in the Telekom Dome.

Fan groups

There are two groups of fans who are committed to supporting Telekom Baskets Bonn: the “Die Fans - Defense” fan club and the “Supporters Club Bonn” fan group. They coexist peacefully and membership in both groups at the same time is easily possible.

"The Fans - Defense"

In August 1996, on the occasion of promotion to the 1st basketball league, the Telekom Baskets Bonn fan club was founded under the name "Die Fans - Defense". Since then, the fan club has grown steadily parallel to the success of the Telekom Baskets Bonn and today, with over 600 members, is one of the largest fan clubs of a German Bundesliga basketball team. The fan club takes care of the organization of the numerous trips away and offers its members a Christmas party every year, a barbecue in summer and many other fan activities. In addition, “Die Fans - Defense” collects donations for selected charitable organizations every season during home games. These can be done in cash at the fan club's stand or in the form of drinks cups and bottles, the deposit of which is then redeemed, thrown into one of the donation bins set up for this purpose.

"Supporters Club Bonn"

In 2007, another fan group called “Supporters Club Bonn” (“SCB” for short) was founded with the aim of meeting the increased demands in the new, larger hall, the Telekom Dome. The “SCB” consists mainly of adolescents and young adults who have come together to heat up the atmosphere at home games from the center of the standing room. The “SCB” also deals with the creative production of fan accessories such as double holders, banners, block flags and the conception of entire fan choreographies. At irregular intervals, the “SCB” publishes an information flyer with the name “D / E / Facto”, which is distributed free of charge in the hall.

Rivalries

ALBA Berlin

The “duel of the capitals” regularly attracts a lot of attention not only in Bonn and Berlin and has even set Europe’s audience record in the meantime. The rivalry arose in 1997 when Bonn, as a newcomer, reached the final straight away and had to admit defeat there after a long battle against Berlin. In the following years, the two teams faced each other in the playoffs.

Other rivalries

At times there were local rivalries, especially with the Bayer Giants Leverkusen or the Cologne 99ers but also with today's Baskets Düsseldorf . In the meantime, all three “local rivals” are no longer represented in the Bundesliga , but rather play in lower-class leagues. For some non-sporting disputes, there has also been a special rivalry with Brose Bamberg .
