Patrick Julian Flomo (born July 19, 1980 in Charlotte (North Carolina) , USA ) is a former German basketball player of American- Liberian descent who now works as a coach.
Player career
Flomo, who is used in the forward and center positions, played in his native country for the Ohio University team . Then he moved to his first professional station in Europe. The 2.03 m tall and 101 kg heavy Flomo first played in Finland at Korihait, where he averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds per game. He then moved to the top club Eiffel Towers in the Netherlands. After he was rarely used there, he moved to Germany in the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga North to the Hertener Löwen in the 05/06 season , although he also had offers from other top clubs in the same league. The reason for him to finally sign a contract in Herten was the Herten commitment Terren Harbut (came from the Ohio Bobcats). For the Hertener Löwen, Flomo achieved 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks per game. This was enough for the first division club from Bonn to give the 26-year-old a contract until 2008. Over the course of the season, Flomo got an average of around 20 minutes of playing time and developed into a top performer.
Although Patrick Flomo is not a giant in basketball with 2.03 m, he is considered to be very strong under the basket due to his enormous jumping ability and long arms. He is notorious for numerous blocks and his spectacular dunking, which gives him his nickname “Dr. Dunk ”.
After Flomo tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee at the away game in Ulm in April 2007 , he had to take a break until December 2007. Thanks to solid performances after his injury, he was able to make it into the finals of the Telekom Baskets Bonn 2008. His contract was then extended until the end of the 2008/2009 season. After reaching the final again in 2009 (3-2 defeat against EWE Baskets Oldenburg), Patrick Flomo extended his contract in Bonn for two more years until the end of the 2010/2011 season. After another 2010/2011 season overshadowed by several injuries, Flomo did not receive a new contract from Telekom Baskets.
At the beginning of July 2011 the s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg announced the commitment of Flomos for the next 3 years. But the contract was canceled in August because Flomo did not pass the medical examinations. Flomo then moved to the second highest German division and signed a contract with the Giants Düsseldorf . For the Giants he completed 28 games during the season and scored 10.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 0.9 blocks on average per game. His contract was then extended for the 2012/2013 season.
After the Giants' athletic ascent was rejected by the league, Flomo left the Düsseldorf Giants in summer 2013 and switched back to the basketball league and signed a contract with the MHP Giants Ludwigsburg . After his contract expired in the summer of 2015, Flomo left the MHP Riesen again and switched to the Crailsheim Merlins within the league . With the club he was relegated from bottom of the table and remained loyal to Crailsheim in the ProA. In the 2017/18 season, Flomo was runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA with Crailsheim and thus achieved promotion to the Bundesliga with Hohenlohern.
He left Crailsheim in the summer break of 2018 and went to the third division team ETB Essen . After the end of the 2018/19 season, in which his Essen team's license was revoked, Flomo resigned as a professional basketball player.
Coaching career
In May 2019 he was introduced as the coach of the joint NBBL team of Artland Dragons and SC Rasta Vechta , and Flomo also took over the coaching position for the men's team of Quakenbrücker TSV (2nd regional league). From December 2019 he also took over the position of assistant coach for the professional team of Artland Dragons (2nd Bundesliga ProA).
