The ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen is a basketball team from Essen . It is part of the basketball department of ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen eV From 2005 to 2019 it was operated by ETB Schwarz-Weiß Basketball Essen GmbH .

history

As the Essen Turner Bund Schwarz-Weiß , the club was a founding member of the 2nd North Basketball League in 1975 . In the 1970s, SGN Essen / RUWA also had an Essen representative in the basketball league . This team withdrew completely from basketball after relegation in 1976, whereupon most of the players switched to the second division ETB .

In June 2005 the newly founded ETB Schwarz-Weiß Basketball Essen GmbH took over the operation of the team.

In 2006 the ETB was relegated to the first regional league. In the summer of 2006, the team name was changed to ETB Wohnbau Baskets Essen after several proposed names had been put to the vote on the ETB website. In the 2006/07 season, the team was sixth in the Regionalliga West, missed promotion, but still received a license for the newly created 2. Bundesliga ProB for the 2007/08 season , as the license of the NVV Lions Mönchengladbach was taken over Had declared waiver. From April 2007, Markus Horn was in charge of the sport as sports director. In the ProB premiere season 2007/08, the ETB won the championship title under the direction of coach Igor Krizanovic and thus rose to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA .

In the 2010/2011 season, the ETB was able to move into the championship round of the ProA for the first time , but was eliminated directly in the first round against the VfL Kirchheim Knights . After the end of the 2012/13 game year, sports director Horn left office. In the second playoff participation in the 2013/2014 season, the ETB Wohnbau Baskets also had to admit defeat in the first round against the BG Göttingen .

In January 2016, the 2nd basketball league initiated a relicensing process against the ETB, as the management and the expert committee cast doubt on the economic performance. The team was deducted four points. According to the league management, this was due to “an intentional or at least grossly negligent violation of the provisions of the license statute”. At the beginning of February 2016, after reviewing the submitted liquidity plan, the league determined that the team could “meet their financial obligations on time within the current competition season”. In October 2015, the league had already sanctioned the ETB with a fine for not complying with the condition.

In the 2016/17 season, the ETB missed the class remaining in fifteenth place and was relegated to the ProB. At the beginning of February 2018, coach Krizanovic resigned from his post after almost eleven years in office. Previously there had been a negative series with only one win out of ten games, the team had slipped to tenth place in the ProB-Nord. Philipp Stachula took over the coaching position and led the ETB in the relegation round to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB class.

In July 2018 Uwe Loch took over the management from Marc Wierig. In February 2019, the ETB's license for the 2018/19 ProB season was subsequently withdrawn due to a lack of economic efficiency. The club was the first to be relegated. At the time of the license withdrawal, Essen was already knocked-off bottom of the table in the northern season. In February 2019, the management of the operating company filed for insolvency and gaming operations were discontinued. They fought for a long time for the existence of the team and tried to "get the club financially on track," said the team management, who gave no reasons for the unfortunate economic situation.

After the bankruptcy of the operating company, the ETB main club took over the management of the team, which from then on played in the 1st regional league. The team was nicknamed "Miners" to underline the bond with the mining tradition of the area. The Wohnbau eG as a long-term sponsor and name giver continued its commitment, the team now entered under the name ETB Wohnbau Miners Essen. The coaching office was taken over by the Spaniard Iria Uxía Romarís Durán, Björn Barchmann became the sporting director. Romarís Durán only stayed in office until the end of October 2019, while Barchmann also took over as coach. The team found themselves in the table cellar of the 1st regional league, in January 2020 Barchmann handed over the coaching position to Dhnesch Kubendrarajah and again mainly took care of his task as sports director. The 2019/20 season in the 1st Regionalliga West was terminated prematurely due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , and the Essen team finished last in the final table with one win and 24 defeats. In June 2020, Barchmann retired as sporting director.

Home ground

The team plays its home games in the Am Hallo sports park in Essen, the hall of which has 2,360 seats and standing room for 226.
