Lutheran Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Siegelsumer Church is located in the East Frisian town of Siegelsum ( Samtgemeinde Brookmerland ) and was built in 1822.

history

A west tower was added to the previous church built in the 13th century in the 15th century. After the church building had suffered badly in the Thirty Years War , it became increasingly dilapidated and finally demolished in 1819 due to severe structural damage. In 1822 the church was replaced by a new one. Some of the old bricks could be reused. The rebuilding took place against the will of the regional church. The Siegelumers pledged their property and in this way obtained the building permit.

Until 1919 the parish had its own pastor and since 1964 the parish has been parishally connected to the Rechtsupweg parish. The Siegelsum parish today has 190 members, making it one of the smallest independent parishes in the Hanover regional church . Between 1973 and 1975 the building was completely renovated.

Building description

The church was built in 1822 as a simple hall building. While the old church had a floor plan of 35.5 mx 12.2 m, the current church is only 16.10 mx 8.15 m.

The mighty west tower with a gable roof, pointed arched windows and buttresses from the 15th century was retained. It serves as a bell cage and also as an entrance portal. Its floor plan is 6 m × 7.3 m with a height of about 12 m. The keel arch portal with soffit is characteristic of the late Gothic. The large bell dates from 1633, the smaller one was cast in 1997.

The long sides are divided into two fields by a pilaster , each with a small window. On the east side there are two small ogival windows with soffits, in the east gable there are two other very small rectangular windows. The church building is closed by a gable roof.

Furnishing

Rohlfs organ from 1845

The old church had a baptismal font made of lead from 1317, which was sold to a dealer from Emden for melting down around 1830. Today's baptism is made of a sandstone block and oak wood. The heavy attachment can be lifted using a rope device.

The pulpit , which dates from 1613 and is designed in the Renaissance style, was taken over from the old church . The four evangelists with their symbols are represented in the fields between the corner pillars. Angel heads below as well as three paintings from the late 18th century showing a Lord's Supper scene, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ. The Vasa Sacra includes a communion chalice from 1668. The sculptor Ockels from Leer created the altar on which the crucifixion scene is depicted in 1887/88. It is flanked by two wooden statuettes of the apostles Peter and Paul.

The Hanoverian King Georg donated an organ in 1845 after the church administrator JH Kirchhoff on Norderney had asked him to procure a new organ. He is named as the main benefactor in an inscription on the delicately painted west gallery. Arnold Rohlfs built the small parapet organ , which has six registers and has largely been preserved. After changes made in 1929, it was restored by Alfred Führer from 1977 to 1980 . The sideways work is decorated on the sides with carved tendrils, in which three incorporated dummy pipes make the prospectus appear larger. Two larger pipe fields surround a three-part, smaller central field, which is crowned by a semicircle with a cymbal star .
