The MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg (proper spelling in capital letters: MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg) are a basketball team from Ludwigsburg playing in the top German basketball league division . Internationally, the MHP giants play in the Basketball Champions League .

history

The sport of basketball in Ludwigsburg looks back on over 50 years of tradition. The roots of today's MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg go back to the basketball department of DJK Ludwigsburg founded in 1960 . After the team in the 1960s was able to achieve years of initial success, and the financial circumstances of DJK Ludwigsburg did not allow the South German by a game operation throughout the room came to bear the cost, joined the basketball department in 1970 of Spvgg 07 Ludwigsburg on. It was under this name that he was promoted to the basketball league for the first time in the 1979/80 season . The EnBW Ludwigsburg team participating in Bundesliga matches was spun off from the main club BSG Basket Ludwigsburg in order to separate the professional and amateur areas. All youth and amateur teams belong to the main basketball club BSG Basket Ludwigsburg . There is a close cooperation between the two clubs, in particular to promote young talent, attract talent and thus secure the foundation of the Bundesliga team.

In 2002 Ludwigsburg was promoted to the basketball league , previously it had participated in the top division until 1997.

In the 2006/07 season, Ludwigsburg stormed to second place in the Bundesliga point round and into the playoffs under the direction of Croatian head coach Silvano Poropat . Leverkusen was defeated in the quarter-finals, and in the semifinals they were eliminated by Bamberg, who then defeated Quakenbrück in the final series and became German champions. In 2008 Ludwigsburg became vice-cup winner, the playoffs were missed in the championship, and Poropat, who had looked after the team since February 2004, was separated.

After the long-standing sponsor EnBW announced its departure for the 2012/2013 season, those responsible were looking for a new team name over the summer. This eventually became Neckar Giant Ludwigsburg . The fans were then involved in the search for a new logo. With the new name, those responsible hope for a higher identification value with the region and the association. In terms of sport, however, the team could not generate an upswing. The whole season was the team in the table cellar and fought to stay. Even a coaching change by Steven Key toward its US compatriot John Patrick beginning of 2013 brought no lasting success and on the final day were subject to the Neckar giants in the decisive duel for the league to Skyliners Frankfurt and thus increased athletic in the 2. Bundesliga ProA from . However, the basketball Bundesliga denied the sporting climber Düsseldorf Baskets the license for the 2013/2014 season for economic reasons and the Neckar Giants were able to secure their league by purchasing a wild card .

In August 2013 the management presented a new namesake. From the 2013/2014 season, the team ran under the name MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg . The consulting firm Mieschke Hofmann und Partner took over the naming rights for the team. The company had previously given its name to the team's venue, the MHPArena .

Patrick led the Ludwigsburgs back into the Bundesliga championship round in the 2013/14 season after years of absence, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Bayern Munich. In 2014/15 the giants qualified eighth for the playoffs again and had to bow to Bamberg in the round of eight. Fifth place in the 2015/16 Bundesliga points round was the best result since 2007, but again did not get past the first playoff round (2: 3 games against Bayern Munich). In the 2016/17 season, the MHP Giants reached the playoffs for the fourth time in a row, but had to admit defeat again in the first round (2: 3 games against Ratiopharm Ulm ). Moving into the semi-finals of the BBL Cup was described as a great success. The leap into the final was missed, they lost to Bamberg.

In the 2017/18 season, the team moved into the semi-finals of the Champions League , followed by the end against AS Monaco (65:87). In the game for third place they lost to UCAM Murcia (74:85). Ludwigsburg's John Patrick was named the best coach of the 2017/18 Champions League season.

In the 2019/20 season, Ludwigsburg was in second place in the Bundesliga (17 wins, four defeats) when the league was interrupted due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus , only to be resumed later as part of a season-end tournament . At the tournament, the team beat Ulm in the semifinals thanks to an outstanding Marcos Knight and made it into the Bundesliga final for the first time. In Ludwigsburg, Patrick relied on a style of play that, according to Marco Baldi , managing director of final opponent Alba Berlin, is designed to destroy the opposing game and is considered uncomfortable by the opposing teams. Ludwigsburg lost the final first leg against Berlin with 65:88 and had to do without his best man from the previous tournament, Marcos Knight, who suffered from a foot injury, just like in the second game. In the final second leg you had to admit defeat 74:75.

In the 2016/17 season, the games of the MHP Giants in all three competitions were attended by a total of 102,066 fans. According to the club, this set a new record for the audience. The average in the Basketball Bundesliga was 3,878 and in the Basketball Champions League 2,871 spectators. The association receives organized support from the two fan clubs “Barock Pirates Ludwigsburg” and “Dunking Dukes”.
