Wayne Bernard (born September 12, 1981 in Poway , California ) is a retired American basketball player .

Career

In 1999, after high school in California, Bernard moved to the US East Coast to study at the college in Davidson in Mecklenburg County (North Carolina) . For the high school team Wildcats Bernard played in the Southern Conference of NCAA Division I . In the two-season conference, the Wildcats won their season after the regular season in 2002 and 2003 . In 2002 Bernard won together with, among others, Emeka Erege and the Czech national player Martin Ides also the championship in the "Conference Tournament", which meant qualification for the national final of the NCAA , where they lost in the first round against the Buckeyes of Ohio State University . The following year, which was Bernard's senior season for the Wildcats, you could not defend the championship title within the Conference.

In 2003, Bernard started his professional career in the Israeli Ligat ha'Al for Maccabi Ironi from Ramat Gan . At the end of the year he left the club and in January 2004 moved to the A1 Ethniki to Ilisiakos from the Greek capital Athens , who, however, were relegated from the top division at the end of the season. In the 2004/05 season, Bernard played for the Dolphins from the Swedish Norrköping , which in the play-off quarter-final in the maximum number of games to eventual champion Sodertalje Kings were eliminated. For the 2005/06 season, Bernard got a contract with the traditional club and former French champion Etoile from Charleville-Mezieres , in the second division LNB Pro B had risen. At the end of the season, however, they were relegated again and Bernard switched to competitor Champagne Basket from Reims , who was still represented in the play-offs for promotion to the top division. Bernard also played for this club in the 2006/07 season before moving to the Finnish Korisliiga to Kouvot from Kouvola in January 2007 . In the 2007/08 season, Kouvot improved to third place after regular time and reached the play-off final series for the championship, which was lost to Espoon Honka .

In 2008 Bernard got a contract with the second division club Mitteldeutscher BC from Weißenfels in the German ProA . With this he reached the championship in the ProA 2008/09 and rose to the top division. Bernard was named the best player of the past season in the ProA. As a climber, you just missed the play-offs for the championship in the 2009/10 basketball Bundesliga . In the second season 2010/11 , however, some things did not go according to plan and at the end of the season they slipped into a relegation zone. Coach Björn Harmsen , who had previously vacated his post in Weißenfels due to an illness, became the coach of the previous league competitor Gießen 46ers and brought Bernard to his new club in Gießen . But here, too, there was no lasting success and the Bundesliga founding member was relegated at the end of the basketball Bundesliga 2011/12 . Steven Key , the predecessor of Harmsen in Gießen as coach, brought Bernard to the Neckar Giants in Ludwigsburg , who, as a competitor of the Gießen team, had only just barely been able to avoid relegation. However, Bernard got off in the following season with Ludwigsburg and left the club in summer 2013. He moved to the Nuremberg basketball club in the Pro A and played there for the 2013/14 season . In August 2014, Bernard joined the league competitor Science City Jena after his former coach Björn Harmsen became head coach there again. He won the championship with Jena in the 2015/16 season and was promoted to the basketball league again.

In April 2017 it was announced that Bernard would not renew his contract in Jena at the end of the 2016/17 season and he returned to Kouvot Kouvola in the Korisliiga. There he reached the quarterfinals of the championship, where they were eliminated against the Helsinki Seagulls .
