Martin Ides (born May 3, 1980 in Krmelín , Moravia ) is a Czech - German basketball coach and former national player . Until November 2013 Ides was the coach of the German second division club Nürnberger BC, for which he had previously played as a player for three years. Ides has German citizenship.

Career

Ides went to study in the United States , where he studied at Davidson College in the town of the same name in North Carolina . Here he played for four years from 1998 to 2002 for the university team Wildcats , including in a team with the later basketball Bundesliga professionals Emeka Erege and Wayne Bernard . In his final season for the Wildcats, they won the 2002 Southern Conference championship of the NCAA , but in the national NCAA finals , it started right at the start in the first round with a loss to the favored Buckeyes of Ohio State University . During his student days, Ides also played in the Czech national team and, as a junior, finished twelfth in the 1999 European Championship finals with the Czech selection. As a result, Ides was mostly overshadowed by veteran Jiří Okáč and one year older Ondřej Starosta , who had almost the same body length as Ides.

After completing his studies, Ides returned to his home country and played for the first division club BK ECM from Nymburk , which at the end of the 2002/03 season lost the final series for the championship in just seven games against BK Opava and achieved its best position for the time being with the runner-up before Nymburk became the dominant series champion in the Czech Republic in the following years. After the beginning of the 2003/04 season, Ides received an offer from the top European club Benetton from Treviso . The Italian champion was previously a finalist in the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague . Ides was only used in the ULEB Euroleague 2003/04 because of foreigner restrictions in the Italian league Lega Basket Serie A , where he came on eight missions with an average of six minutes. In the second group stage of the 16 best teams, last year's finalist Treviso was able to leave Panathinaikos Athens and FC Barcelona behind, but failed in a direct comparison against national rivals Montepaschi Siena , who would later also win the Italian championship, to make it into the Final Four finals . After leaving the European competition with Treviso, Ides returned to his home country to the master from Opava . However, he was unable to defend his title while Ides' former team from Nymburk won the first of ten consecutive championships.

For the 2004/05 season Ides got a contract with the French first division club Jeanne d'Arc from Vichy . However, the club remained largely unsuccessful and only won seven wins in 34 games, which was no more than the last place in the table in the LNB Pro A and meant relegation. Ides averaged no more than ten minutes of playing time in 25 games. In the pre-season 2005/06 Ides was allowed again in Italy when runner Armani Jeans Milan audition before in the season at the Swedish Basketligan at Akropol BBK in Stockholm district of Rinkeby was active. In the play-offs for the championship they lost in the semi-final series against eventual champions Plannja Basket Luleå , with Ides reaching a double-double over the season . In the 2006/07 season, Ides played again in his Moravian homeland for BK Nová huť from Ostrava . For the team it was enough in eighth place to move into the play-offs for the championship, in which they were eliminated in the first round. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season Ides tried again abroad and played at the beginning of the season in the Greek A2 Ethniki for the first division relegated Apollon from Patras . After a short time he returned to the Czech league in early December 2007 and played for last year's climber BK Kondoři from Liberec , who missed the play-offs at the end of the season in tenth place.

For the 2008/09 season Ides got a contract with the German second division club Mitteldeutscher BC from Weissenfels . The MBC won the championship of this league and the return to the basketball league in the ProA 2008/09 with Ides' former fellow student Wayne Bernard . However, Ides himself did not get a new contract and moved one class lower to the Nuremberg Basketball Club. The NBC had only managed to stay in the league through the withdrawal of another team and now reached fifth place in the ProB 2009/10, a placement in the top third of the table. In the ProB 2010/11 they played for the first time play-offs for promotion to the ProA and the NBC controversially lost the decisive semi-final series against Ehingen Steeples after the apparently won opening game of the series had to be repeated. After other clubs did not participate, the NBC was promoted to the ProA. In the ProA 2011/12 , in which the ambitious newcomer only achieved twelfth place, Ides had a significantly reduced playing time of an average of ten minutes per game and at the end of the season declared his retirement from active competitive sport. Instead, Ides was the successor to coach Derrick Taylor for the following season . In the ProA 2012/13 , NBC improved to sixth place with novice coach Ides, but was eliminated in the first round of the play-offs for promotion against the Düsseldorf Baskets in five games, after having won two games after three games had been in front. In November 2013, Martin Ides was given leave of absence due to the unsatisfactory sporting situation for the club.

In the summer of 2015 he took over the coaching position at the Fibalon Baskets Neumarkt in the 2nd regional league and left the team in 2017 to accept an offer as coach of TSV Ansbach (1st regional league).
