Southern Conference
The Southern Conference ( SoCon ) is a league of US university sports founded in 1921 by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and part of Division I of the NCAA. The Southern Conference is located in the southeastern United States, the participating universities of the SoCon are in the states of Alabama , Georgia , North Carolina , South Carolina and Tennessee . SoCon is based in the city of Spartanburg in South Carolina. Competitions take place in 19 different sports, men compete in 10, women in nine of them. The College Football Teams ( American Football ) of the Southern Conference play in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, the former I-AA. It is one of the oldest of the major university sports leagues in the United States, only the Big Ten (1896), Missouri Valley (1907) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) Conferences can look back on a longer history.
The Southern Conference is considered one of the stronger leagues of college football within the division and belongs to the midfield within the various basketball leagues. The SoCon garnered nationwide attention following its sporting successes in recent years, including the three-time NCAA Division-I football champions, the Appalachian State Mountaineers, and the Davidson Wildcats, who made it into the Elite Eight of the Division I men's basketball championship.
