Mountain West Conference
The Mountain West Conference (MWC) is a regional relay in college sports in the United States . From a historical point of view, it is one of the younger seasons in Division I, the top division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and in college football is one of the current eleven seasons of the Bowl Subdivision, which was known as Division IA until 2006 . The MWC was founded in July 1999 and mainly comprises universities in the mid-west and south-west as well as in the southern United States ( California , Colorado , Nevada , New Mexico , Texas , Utah and Wyoming ). The conference headquarters are located in Colorado Springs , Colorado. The sports in which the Mountain West Conference organizes competitions include baseball , basketball , American football , golf , tennis , skiing, as well as athletics for men and basketball, soccer , volleyball , softball , golf, tennis, swimming and diving with women.
history
The Mountain West Conference was founded in 1999 by eight universities that had previously left the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The number of universities in the WAC had risen to 16 three years earlier through the inclusion of former members of the Southwest Conference (SWC), which was dissolved in May 1996, which had led to the organization of the WAC in the form of two divisions. However, some of the universities involved were unsatisfied with this situation for sporting and financial reasons, so they left the WAC and founded the MWC.
In 2005, Texas Christian University , which had previously been a member of Conference USA , was accepted in addition to the eight founding members . The Boise State University changed with the start of the 2011/2012 season from the WAC to the Mountain West Conference, after receiving an offer in June of 2010. In contrast, the University of Utah left the MWC and joined the Pacific-12 Conference beginning in the 2011/2012 season . In August 2010, California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno announced that they were moving from WAC to the Mountain West Conference. The Brigham Young University declared in the same month to retire at the start of the 2011 season from the MWC and as in the future, the football team Independent to leave without starting conference bond, while the other teams of the University of the West Coast Conference will join.
