The Texas Christian University (also TCU called) is a private university in Fort Worth , Texas in the United States , where 10,394 students are currently enrolled. The college is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was founded in 1873.

history

After their return from the American Civil War , the two brothers Addison and Randolph Clark founded the AddRan Male & Female College together with their father Joseph A. Clark in 1873 in the small town of Thorp Spring in Texas . AddRan, formed from the first names of the two brothers, was the name of Addison's first son, who died of diphtheria in 1872 at the age of three . The name is still part of the humanities and social sciences faculty today.

The brothers were religious scholars of the Campbellite stream within the 19th century Restoration Movement, which was dominant in the American church . The Campbellites were the spiritual forerunners of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) , congregations of Christ and the Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ . They stood out as committed advocates of education. From 1869 to 1874, the Clark brothers ran the Male & Female Seminary of Fort Worth , a preparatory course for studies, but had increased interest in a university for women and men that had Christian traits but was not denominational.

The AddRan College was a time when the nation's only 15% of all students were female, one of the first mixed-gender university west of the Mississippi . In the first year, 13 students were enrolled at AddRan College , by the end of the academic year there were already 123. In 1889 the university entered into a partnership with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was renamed AddRan Christian University .

In the course of further expansion, the college moved to Waco , Texas, where Baylor University was also based in 1895 . In 1902 the university was renamed again, this time to the name Texas Christian University (mostly abbreviated: TCU), which is still today .

In 1910 the main building burned down under unexplained circumstances. To fund the new build and get the college to move to rapidly growing Fort Worth, a group of business people provided the university with $ 200,000 in two acres. TCU started operations at its new location in the same year.
