Restoration Movement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Restoration Movement was an American Christian revival movement of the 19th century. It grew out of two branches, one led by Barton Stone and the other led by Irish Presbyterians Thomas and Alexander Campbell . It is therefore also called the Stone Campbell Movement .

The aim of the Restoration Movement was to bring Christianity back to its New Testament foundations, not only in terms of theology, but especially in terms of details of daily life and community practice. The Restoration Movement also rejects the creeds and other traditions that are also represented by the denominations of the Reformation. Essential points are the baptism of believers by immersion and the congregational community organization.

The Disciples of Christ emerged from the Restoration Movement , from which in the course of time the various branches of the churches of Christ and the international churches of Christ split off as more conservative groups.

Today, among the churches from the Restoration Movement, there are fundamentalist , evangelical and ecumenically oriented mainline churches . Due to the congregational structure, there can be congregations of different directions within a church.
