Robert Lewis Lilly (born July 26, 1939 in Throckmorton , Texas , USA ) is an American former American football player . He played on the position of defensive tackles in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dallas Cowboys .

Youth / college

Lilly was born in Texas, but his parents moved him to Portland , Oregon , where he started playing football and basketball in high school . Lilly returned to Texas, received a scholarship, and played for the TCU Horned Frogs College Football at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth , Texas. With Lilly on the team, the Horned Frogs developed into one of the best defensive teams of the time. 1958 get the opposing team on average only eight points per game against the team from Fort Worth. The move into the Cotton Bowl was the result - but the game ended in a draw. 1959 allowed the Horned Frogs only a total of 75 points in the season, but they lost in the Bluebonnet Bowl. 1960 was mixed for the team from Texas, a bowl game was not achieved. However, Lilly received excellent reviews, he became a selection player in college football, nothing stood in the way of his professional career.

Professional career

Lilly, nicknamed Mister Cowboy or Mister Defense , was voted 13th in the first round of the 1961 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys - a team that had been inducted into the NFL a year earlier. In 1960 Tom Landry became the team's first coach . Lilly's incomparable career began. With him in defense, where he first played as a defensive end and was put in the position of tackle by Landry during the 1961 season, the Cowboys should develop into a top team in the league. After they narrowly failed in the so-called Ice Bowl in the NFC Championship Game at the Green Bay Packers in 1967 , they were able to win the NFC championship game in 1970 and 1971 and move into the Super Bowl . In Super Bowl V , the Cowboys competed against the Baltimore Colts and lost just 16:13. A year later, in Super Bowl VI , they played against the Miami Dolphins and won 24-3.

Lilly was an extremely fast player, which was amazing considering his weight of 118 kg. He was increasingly used to attack the opposing quarterback , which he succeeded again and again with flying colors. Due to his agility, he was able to score four touchdowns during his career. He was able to secure the ball after losing the ball and carry it back to the opponent's end zone . Lilly wasn't just tough on his opponents. During his 14-year career, he was only unable to compete once due to an injury. In the regular season , Lilly played 196 times for the Cowboys. As a professional he never played for any other team.

Honors

Lilly played in 11 Pro Bowls . He was voted All-Pro ten times . He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , Pro Football Hall of Fame , Texas Sports Hall of Fame , National Football League 75th Anniversary All-Time Team , NFL 1960s All-Decade Team , NFL 1970s All-Decade Team and is honored at the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor .
