Robert Gene Hickerson (born February 15, 1935 in Trenton , Tennessee , † October 20, 2008 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American football player .

Career

Hickerson began his career as a football player in high school . In Memphis he played for some time in a team with Elvis Presley , with whom he then became a lifelong friend. During his training at the University of Mississippi , he was already considered one of the best offensive players in the Southeastern Conference . He was then committed in the 1957 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns . He remained throughout his professional career in the US professional league NFL in the same club. After three seasons he broke his leg in 1961 and had to sit out due to an injury. Between 1962 and his retirement in 1973 he played as a guard without missing another game. In 1964 he managed to win the NFL championship with the Browns. From 1964 he was nominated seven times in a row for the All-Pro team and from 1965 six times in a row for the Pro Bowl . He is also a member of the National Football League 1960s All-Decade Team of the best NFL players of the 1960s. In 2007 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
