Lawrence Cleo "Larry" Morris (born December 10, 1933 in Atlanta , Georgia , † December 19, 2012 ibid) was an American American football player in the National Football League (NFL).
Player career
College career
Larry Morris visited in Decatur , the High School and studied after his graduation from 1951 to 1954 at the Georgia Institute of Technology . In college , he played center American football. He also played basketball on the side . Morris was the team captain of both teams. In 1954 he was voted All-American for his performance in football . He and his team took part in the Orange Bowl in 1952 and the Sugar Bowl in 1953 and 1954 . His team won all three games. Morris graduated with a degree in industrial management .
Professional career
In 1955, Morris was drafted seventh in the first round by the Los Angeles Rams . The team was coached by Sid Gillman . At the Rams, Morris played mostly in defense as a linebacker with Les Richter . In his rookie year , he moved his team to the NFL final . The game was lost against the Cleveland Browns 38:14. Morris caught an interception from quarterback Otto Graham in that game . In the following two game years, Morris could only play a few games for his team due to injuries.
After three years with the Rams, Morris signed a contract with the Chicago Bears overseen by George Halas . In 1963 Morris was able to move into the NFL final again with his team. Opponents were the New York Giants , who had to admit defeat at 14:10. The Bears defense kept putting pressure on Giants quarterback YA Tittle . Morris was able to intercept a pass from Tittle and carry it over a distance of 61 yards in the direction of the Giants end zone . He was only stopped at the six-yard line of the Giants by their defense. Morris won the ball a short time later, resulting in a touchdown for his team. Morris was named the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP).
After a year playing with the Atlanta Falcons , Morris retired in 1966.
After the career
After his playing career, Larry Morris worked as a businessman in the insurance industry. Until his death he suffered from dementia , which he himself attributed to his work as a professional football player. His family donated his brain to Boston University for exercise science . The grave of Larry Morris is unknown.
Honors
Morris is a member of the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team and his college hall of fame. He was once voted All Pro . In 1992 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
