Yelberton Abraham "YA" Tittle (nickname: YAT ) (born October 24, 1926 in Marshall , Texas - † October 8, 2017 in Atherton , California ) was an American American football player. He played quarterback for the Baltimore Colts in the AAFC , as well as for the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Tittle grew up in Marshall and attended high school , where he was used as a quarterback and because of his achievements, the scouts of the college teams noticed. Since his hometown is near Louisiana, he accepted a scholarship at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge , especially since he liked the campus of this university much better than the University of Texas at Austin . Tittle, nicknamed "YAT" played for the Louisiana State University Tigers from 1944 to 1947 and had his best year in 1946 when he won 9 out of 10 games. Even during his studies, the unusual tenacity and determination of the actually rather reserved Tittle became apparent. Although he lost his shoes and belt buckle after a hard tackle after a failed pass attempt and his pants slipped down to his knees, he ran 50 yards to the opposing end zone . The game was lost anyway.

Professional time

Tittle was selected in the 1948 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions in the 1st round in 6th place. But Tittle accepted an offer from the Colts and played in the All-America Football Conference for the next two years. After the 1949 season, the Colts joined the NFL, but had to cease playing after the 1950 season due to financial problems. All players were sent to the draft. Tittle was then selected in third place by the 49ers in 1951. For the team from California he played until 1960. In 1955 he was able to achieve 17 touchdowns - that was league best performance that year. The 49ers could never move into an NFL championship game . After ten years, where he was only a substitute behind Frankie Albert in the first two years , Tittle was transferred to the New York Giants . Tittle was thought to be too old and had signed a junior quarterback in San Francisco a few years earlier. The assessment of the team management of the 49ers should quickly prove to be wrong. Tittle was immediately involved in the game of the team from New York City by the coach of the Giants Allie Sherman in 1961 and had his best years there. In 1962 he threw 33 touchdowns and in 1963 36 touchdowns, which meant the season best of all quarterbacks and in 1963 brought him to the first place on the all-time best list. Tittle was the first quarterback in the league who could bring more than 30 touchdown passes to the man in two consecutive game rounds. In 1962 Tittle also got seven touchdown passes in one game - this was an absolute NFL record.

While Tittle was never able to reach a final with either the Colts or the San Francisco team , he managed it three times in a row from 1961 to 1963. The NFL Championship Games were all lost. 1961 and 1962 against the Green Bay Packers under Vince Lombardi with quarterback Bart Starr with 37: 0 and 16: 7 and 1963 against the Chicago Bears with coach George Halas and quarterback Billy Wade with 14:10. Accelerated by a tough tackle Tittle had to take in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers , he ended his career in 1964.

Tittle could never win a championship. He was a professional for 17 years and was able to achieve a total of 242 touchdowns in the regular season . 55.5% of his passes could be caught for a gain of 33,070 yards. As a runner, he was also able to carry 33 balls into the end zone . In his last year he scored an annual income as a player of 75,000 US dollars .

Honors

Tittle was named NFL Most Valuable Player in 1957, 1961, 1962 and 1963 . He played in six Pro Bowls , the final game of the season's best players. Tittle has been voted All-Pro four times . He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the Texas Sports Hall of Fame , the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the Louisiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame. His shirt number 14 is no longer awarded by the Giants, they also honor him on the New York Giants Ring of Honor . The city of Baton Rouge named a street after him.

After the career

Tittle owned an insurance office in Silicon Valley and was a multiple millionaire as a successful businessman. He found his final resting place in the Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto .
