Frederick Rudolph "Fred" Dean (* 24. February 1952 in Arcadia , Louisiana ; † 14. October 2020 ) was an American American football poker players of the National Football League (NFL) on the position of the defensive ends . He began his professional career in 1975 with the San Diego Chargers and resigned after the 1985/1986 season as a player in the San Francisco 49ers . Dean was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on February 2, 2008 , and inducted into it on August 2 of the same year.

college

Dean played for Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. He turned down an offer from nearby Grambling State University to play under legendary coach Eddie Robinson . He has been named one of the top linebacker college football players on several occasions .

Professional time

The San Diego Chargers selected him in 1975 at a total of 33rd place in the draft , where he was immediately converted to the defensive end. In this position he then played his entire professional career. During the 1981/1982 season he was given in exchange for two draft picks to San Francisco, where he was supposed to help the 49ers win two Super Bowls . His first game as a 49er was a key game against the Dallas Cowboys . Dean played with his new team after only two practice sessions, but was still able to put pressure on opposing quarterback Danny White and recorded three sacks . Author Tom Danyluk later described Dean's performance as "the greatest series of downs I've ever seen from a pass rusher".

In the next home game against the Los Angeles Rams , which was won like the game against the Cowboys, he recorded five sacks. A total of 13 sacks were made over the course of the season, twelve of them for the 49ers. San Francisco was supposed to win the Super Bowl that year, but San Diego's defense collapsed after Dean's departure and could no longer match the performances before his departure. Dean also played a major role in winning the Super Bowl in 1984, although this year he was only used in typical pass situations.

1983 brought Dean to his personal record of 17 sacks in a season, where he also set the then NFL record with six sacks in a single game. Dean recorded 93.5 sacks in his career, including those sacks up until 1982 that are not officially listed by the NFL. He was elected to the Pro Bowl four times .
