Randy Gene Moss (* 13. February 1977 in Rand , West Virginia ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of wide receiver . He played for the Minnesota Vikings , Oakland Raiders , New England Patriots , Tennessee Titans and most recently for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). In 2018, Moss was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Career

The 1.93 meter tall Moss was already a versatile athlete in his youth who was active in basketball, American football and athletics. After a brawl with a white classmate he beat up for the color of his skin, he had to bury his dream of playing for the Fighting Irish at the University of Notre Dame . Instead, he went to Marshall University . There Moss established himself as one of the best wide receivers of his year and impressed with his speed: he ran the 100 and 200 meter sprints in under eleven and 22 seconds, respectively. In his first two years of college, he caught 168 throws, gained 3,356 yards of space and 53 touchdowns . However, he was caught using marijuana and engaged in domestic violence against his girlfriend, which is why he was considered talented, but his character was questionable.

Before the 1998 NFL Draft , the Dallas Cowboys (8th pick) promised to sign him, but backed off at the last moment. Therefore, despite outstanding statistics in college football in the 1998 NFL Draft, he was selected only 21st by the Minnesota Vikings . He immediately established himself as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL by gaining 1,317 yards of space in his first season, setting the league record of 17 touchdowns, being selected for the Pro Bowl and for the NFL Rookie of the Year Award (Offense). Before the Dallas game, Moss swore the Cowboys would "forever regret" not drafting him and scored three touchdowns. In his career, Moss would win all seven games against the Cowboys. Because of his "unique combination of athleticism, catch safety and game intelligence" Moss earned the honorary name "The Freak", was compared with the Hall of Fame players Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice and was considered the football counterpart to Michael Jordan . The team around quarterback Randall Cunningham (who replaced the injured Brad Johnson ) won 15 of their 16 season games and only failed in overtime in the NFC final at the Atlanta Falcons .

In the following five years Moss always managed more than 1,000 yards of space and was twice (2000 and 2003) with 15 and 17 touchdowns the most successful wide receiver in the NFL. However, Moss also caused a stir by, among other things , wearing an Afro look , mobbing referees, bumping into them or splashing them with water, mocking opponents and fans and in 2005, against the Green Bay Packers, mocked the opposing fans after a touchdown by pretending to be as if pulling his pants down in front of them. He also admitted "not always giving everything" and was whistled at by his own fans at times. This later resulted in a feud against New York Jets - cornerback Darrelle Revis , who mocked him as a "slouch".

In March 2005, Moss was switched to the Oakland Raiders after his productivity had dropped significantly and he caused a sensation through scandals. In Oakland he was unable to build on his achievements, and in 2007 he moved to the New England Patriots , where he played his strongest season. He harmonized with quarterback Tom Brady and broke Jerry Rice's record for wide receivers with 23 touchdowns in one season . With the Patriots he won 18 games in a row and made it back to the Pro Bowl before the team from Foxborough lost to the underdog New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII at 14:17. Moss scored the touchdown at 14:10 and just missed a long throw from Brady seconds before the end. In 2008 and 2009 Moss scored 1,008 and 1,264 yards respectively for eleven and 13 touchdowns, but the Patriots always failed in the play-offs. On April 30, 2008, Randy Moss announced that he would join the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Moss Motorsports LLC this season . In July 2008, Moss announced that he had bought 50 percent of Morgan-Dollar Motorsports .

In 2010, Moss was retired from coach Bill Belichick : on October 6, 2010, he (and a seven-round draft pick in 2012) was swapped back to the Minnesota Vikings for a third-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft . After he was kicked out again after a few games, when he loudly complained about the allegedly "inhumane" quality of the team food, he was accepted by the Tennessee Titans . The Titans were the only team Moss wanted to take on. For the Titans, he completed eight games this season. Moss initially ended his NFL career on August 1, 2011. In March 2012, after a trial session with head coach Jim Harbaugh , Randy Moss signed a new one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers . With the 49ers he reached the Super Bowl XLVII and caught two passes for 41 yards of space, but lost with 31:34. After that, Moss quit for the second time, and that same year disbanded his NASCAR truck team.

In February 2018, Moss was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Style of play

Moss played with the Minnesota Vikings for most of his career .

Moss was seen as a physically dominant wide receiver who, with a combination of “outstanding coordination, sprint strength, jump height, catch security and a sense for the spectacular”, was one of the best buyers for long throws (“deep threat”). Despite his penchant for scandals, he was statistically one of the best wide receivers of all time: with 154 touchdowns he was second on the all-time NFL list behind Jerry Rice at the time of his final retirement , his 15,292 yards of space meant third place, and his 982 throws caught 9th place.

family

Randy Moss's parents are Maxine Moss and Randy Pratt, but Moss has very little contact with his father. He has a sister and brother, Eric Moss , who had a brief stint in the NFL as an offensive lineman with the Minnesota Vikings. Randy Moss has five children with his girlfriend Libby Offut.
