William Layton Roaf (born April 18, 1970 in Pine Bluff , Arkansas ) is a retired American football player on the offensive tackle position . He played from 1993 to 2005 for the New Orleans Saints and the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL).

College career

Roaf played both basketball and football in high school . After serving on several football selection teams, Louisiana Tech University recruited him for their football team. Here he played from 1989 to 1992. In his final season he was one of the finalists of the Outland Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best offensive or defensive line player in college football . He was also named to the All American selection that year .

NFL career

Because of his sporting success, his speed despite his height and his good ability to block, he was selected in 1993 in the first round of the NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints . Roaf played for the Saints for nine years and was elected to the Pro Bowl seven times during that time . After an injury in the 2001 season, he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in March 2002 . Until his retirement from active professional sport in 2005, he was nominated four more times for the Pro Bowl.

Awards and honors

In total, Roaf has been called up to the Pro Bowl 11 times and the All Pro Team nine times in 13 years . He is a member of the National Football League 1990s All-Decade Team and the National Football League 2000s All-Decade Team, as well as the Arkansas, Louisiana and New Orleans Saints Halls of Fame . In 2012 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame . In 2014 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .

Private

Roaf's mother, Andree Layton Roaf , was a successful lawyer who received several honors. She was also the first African American woman to appear on the Arkansas Supreme Court. Roaf's father was a dentist. In 2009 Roaf worked at Santa Monica Junior College in California as a trainer for the offensive line .
