Devin Hester Devorris (* 4. November 1982 in Riviera Beach , Florida ) is a former American American football poker players in the National Football League (NFL). Hester was mainly used as a kickoff or punt return, but occasionally also as a cornerback and wide receiver . After years of engagement with the Chicago Bears , he played for the Atlanta Falcons , the Baltimore Ravens and the Seattle Seahawks, among others .
His nicknames in the American press are Windy City Flyer (after "The Windy City" as Chicago's nickname ) and Anytime (for its ability to get a touchdown from any game situation with a return ). He holds the NFL records for most return touchdowns in a season and most return touchdowns in an NFL career. In 2007 he was also the first player to return the player-opening kickoff of a super bowl to a touchdown.
college
Hester was at the University of Miami , where he was already appointed as a sophomore in various All-American teams, so according to experts he was one of the best college players of the year. Even at that time he was feared throughout the nation, mainly because of his return qualities, not only in punts and kickoffs, but also in blocked punt and field goal attempts. To this day he is the only player at his university who was used in attack, defense and special teams .
NFL
Chicago Bears
In 2006, Hester was selected by the Bears in the second round of the NFL Draft . Their head coach Lovie Smith relied primarily on his qualities as a returner, which was also reflected during the games, where he was rarely used as a cornerback or receiver, but rather played as a returner. Hester only played 13 out of 16 possible season games, but scored six touchdowns, including a 108-yard return after a missed field goal attempt, which was meanwhile the longest play in NFL history. At the end of the season, he was in the final for Rookie of the Year . Due to the extraordinarily good 2006 season, Hester gained national recognition. In the Super Bowl XLI , he was the first player to carry the player-opening kickoff of a Super Bowl back to the touchdown. These were also the fastest points scored in a Super Bowl at the time - the record was broken in Super Bowl XLVIII .
In the 2007 season , Hester improved his own record for most return touchdowns in a season from five to six. He was also able to achieve two return touchdowns in one game for the second time in his career. He was also able to achieve two more touchdowns as a wide receiver . As in 2006, he was nominated for the Pro Bowl .
Atlanta Falcons
In 2014, Hester's contract was dissolved by the Bears, shortly afterwards he signed a new contract with the Atlanta Falcons, where he became the first player in NFL history to carry 20 Returns back to a touchdown. He also scored a touchdown in the running game in the game , forcing and capturing a fumble .
Baltimore Ravens
For the 2016 season, Hester was signed by the Baltimore Ravens. He was released by the Ravens on December 13, 2016.
Seattle Seahawks
After losing their receiver and return specialist Tyler Lockett , the Seattle Seahawks signed Hester on January 3, 2017 for the upcoming play-offs .
Resign as an active player
After Hester was no longer active as a player in the 2017 season , he announced his official resignation as a player in the NFL on December 12, 2017.
