Robert Paxton "Rob" Gronkowski (* 14. May 1989 in Amherst , New York ) is an American American football poker players on the position of tight ends . He played for the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL) from 2010 to 2018 . After announcing his retirement in 2019, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 . Gronkowski holds the NFL season record for most captured touchdowns in a season (17). His nickname is " Gronk ".

Life

Gronkowski grew up in Williamsville, New York , and played basketball and American football in high school there.

NFL

Gronkowski was selected 42nd by the Patriots in the 2010 NFL Draft . Under coach Bill Belichick , he immediately made the leap into the regular formation around quarterback Tom Brady in his rookie season : "Gronk" caught 42 passes for 546 yards of space and ten touchdowns . The Patriots won 14 games of the season, but were eliminated in the first round of the play-offs against the New York Jets .

In his second season, Gronkowski continued to improve. On December 11, 2011, he started his 15th touchdown, setting a new NFL record for tight ends. He finished the season with the NFL records for tight ends with 17 captured touchdowns (he ran another and ended the season with a total of 18 touchdowns) and 1,327 yards of space. For this he was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2011 . The following season, 2012, he also played strong until he broke his forearm on Matchday 11. He made his comeback in the AFC playoff semifinals against the Houston Texans , but broke his arm again and contracted a serious infection at the break point. Therefore, he missed the first game days of the 2013 season. Shortly after his comeback, his cruciate ligament tore , which is why he did not return until the 2014 season. After a strong season (82 passes caught, 1,124 yards of space gained, 12 touchdowns) he was elected to the Pro Bowl. In the Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks , he caught the touchdown to the meanwhile 13: 7 of the Patriots and thus contributed to the 28:24 victory. The 2015 season Gronkowski played strong again (72 trapped passes, 1,176 yards of space gained, 11 touchdowns, Pro Bowl), but failed with the Patriots in the AFC final at the Denver Broncos . The following season in 2016 was associated with major knee and back problems for him, so he only played five games, but still won the Super Bowl LI with the Patriots as a spectator . In the following season 2017, Gronkowski played strong up to the 13th matchday (849 yards of space gain, 7 touchdowns), until he was suspended for a game in the game against the Buffalo Bills because of an assault against Bill's cornerback Tre'Davious White .

On March 24, 2019, Gronkowski announced the end of his career via Instagram.

On April 21, 2020, Gronkowski declared that he wanted to play in the NFL again. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that the Patriots Gronkowski gave together with a seven-round pick in exchange for a four-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . For the Buccaneers, Gronkowski will play again with Tom Brady , who moved to Tampa Bay as a free agent in March.

Gronkowski's brothers Dan Gronkowski , Chris Gronkowski and Glenn Gronkowski also played in the NFL. Dan and Rob played a few matches for New England in 2011, and Glenn was on the Patriots Practice Squad . Rob and Glenn managed the curiosity of winning a Super Bowl ring as a pair of brothers on the same team (even if neither were used) . Gronkowski's ancestor was the American cyclist and Olympian Ignatius Gronkowski .

World Wrestling Entertainment

Gronkowski was in the wrestling ring for the first time in April 2017 as part of WWE WrestleMania 33 . On March 11, 2020, it was announced that he had signed a contract with WWE. He made his SmackDown debut on March 20, 2020, and joined his longtime friend Mojo Rawley . He hosted WrestleMania 36 on April 4th and 5th, 2020. On April 5th, 2020, he won the WWE 24/7 Championship from friend Mojo Rawley. He lost this title to R-Truth on June 1, 2020 .

Trivia

Gronkowski starred in the film Entourage and had an appearance on the comedy series Family Guy . He also had minor guest appearances in the films The Lit Party , American Violence , The Clapper , Boss Level and Deported . From February to April 2020 he took part in the third season of the US version of The Masked Singer as White Tiger and reached the ninth of a total of 18 places.
