 <2015 2017>

The 2016 NFL season marked the 97th season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 8, 2016. The season ended with the Super Bowl LI on February 5, 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston , Texas .

After 21 years in St. Louis , the Rams were back in Los Angeles this season . The Minnesota Vikings played their first season at the new US Bank Stadium , which was built on the site of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome , their former home.

Rule changes

The following rule changes occurred at the annual owners meeting on March 22nd, 2016:

  • Any chop blocks below the belt are prohibited
  • The area from which a player may no longer be pulled down from behind ( horse-collar tackle ) is extended from the shoulder pads to the area above the signature
  • If a team takes an unauthorized time-out, this will be counted as a game delay
  • If a player touches the ball within the field after he has already run out of bounds, there is no more space penalty, the loss of a down remains
  • All coaches who announce moves are allowed to have radio contact regardless of their location

In addition, on March 23, 2016, it was introduced on a trial basis for one year that a touchback leads to the 25-yard line and a player who incurs two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct within a game is excluded from the game.

At the owners' meeting on May 24, 2016 it was decided that for the 2016 season the correct implementation of a penalty, the number of downs, the remaining playing time and the location of a foul can be verified by video evidence. In addition, the referees may call the league officials in New York to ensure that the rules of the game are being applied correctly.

In addition, it was introduced that the teams no longer have to mark the player they intend to get back from the Injured Reserve List when placing them on this list and can thus react more independently of the situation.

NFL draft

Jared Goff was selected as the first player in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The 2016 NFL Draft took place in Chicago April 28-30. By swapping draft rights, the Tennessee Titans gave their first round pick to the Los Angeles Rams , who thereby selected quarterback Jared Goff as the first player in the draft. Moritz Böhringer also made history in the 2016 draft , as he became the first player to be drafted directly from Europe into the NFL without having attended college.

Regular season

The regular season began on September 8, 2016 with the new edition of Super Bowl 50 . The Denver Broncos won at home against the Carolina Panthers just 21:20. It comprised 256 games that were played in 17 game weeks, with each team playing 16 games and a game-free week ( Bye Week ) between the fourth and twelfth week. 17 games were played as Monday Night Game , two of which were double headers in the first week. On the last weekend all games took place on Sunday. There were also 17 games on Thursday night, starting with the opening game on September 8th and games on Thanksgiving . In the 16 games of the 17th week on January 1, 2017, all teams met - as has been customary since 2010 - against an opponent from their division.

Games in the NFL International Series

As in previous years, regular season games were held as part of the NFL International Series . For the first time, however, four games were played outside the United States, with two games at Wembley Stadium , a game at Twickenham Stadium and, since 2005, a game in Mexico City at the Aztec Stadium .

Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl was played on January 29, 2017, exactly one week before the Super Bowl LI at Camping World Stadium in Orlando , Florida . On June 2, 2016 it was announced that from the Pro Bowl onwards, the selection teams from the two conferences will play against each other again. The AFC team won 20:13 against the NFC team .

Protests against racism

In the National Football League Protests Against Racism, National Football League (NFL) players have been protesting racism since the 2016 season by not standing or otherwise acting abnormally during the United States National Anthem. This has been controversial as the behavior has been viewed in part as disrespectful to the United States .

The perception of protests began in the third week of the preseason in 2016, noted as the press that the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers , Colin Kaepernick , while the national anthem remained seated. In fact, he was already in the first two preseason games, where he didn't play and didn't wear a 49ers jersey.
