Jon Steven Young (born October 11, 1961 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) is a retired American football player on the position of quarterback . He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). In 2005 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

college

Young played college football under head coach LaVell Edwards at Brigham Young University (BYU), named after Young's great-grandfather Brigham Young , the Mormon prophet . In 1982 he replaced Jim McMahon as quarterback for the Cougars and threw passes for 3,902 yards and 33 touchdowns in 1983 . The pass rate of 71.3% passed was a new NCAA record. That year he finished second in the Heisman Trophy election , behind Nebraska's Mike Rozier . Young ended his college career with the game-winning touchdown in a 21:17 win over the University of Missouri-Columbia in the 1983 Holiday Bowl .

Professional time

Young was selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals , but instead signed a contract with the Los Angeles Express in 1984 from the new competitive league United States Football League (USFL). Only after the league ceased operations he came to the NFL, where he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1985 and 1986 . The Buccaneers were an uncompetitive team, winning only two games each in 14 losses. Young was not able to convince and mostly improvised with running games. As a starting quarterback, he could only win three games - with 16 defeats. The Buccaneers had the first pick in the following NFL draft and the new coach wanted to pick quarterback Vinny Testaverde ; Young was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers for two draft picks (second and fourth round: Winston Moss and Bruce Hill were selected) and payment of one million dollars at the instigation of the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers , Bill Walsh . Young played with the 49ers until the end of his career after the 1999 season.

In the 49ers he was only the second man behind Joe Montana for many years and fought an intense rivalry with Montana for the place as a starter. During this period he won two Super Bowls as a reservist while the 49ers dominated the NFL. Young turned down the chance to switch to another team several times. Since Montana was often injured, Young came again and again to sporadic missions.

He got his chance to lead the team permanently, however, when Montana was seriously injured in the elbow in a play-off game in the 1990 season . Young took over and was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) after the 1992 season . The following year Young started off weak due to a hand injury, but showed outstanding performances as the season progressed. By the end of the season, he had set a franchise record with the most passing yards (4,023). Still, Young was far from popular with fans of the 49ers, who were loyal to Montana, who had switched to the Kansas City Chiefs before the 1993 season , and Young agreed to qualify to lead the 49ers to the title.

Young was able to achieve a personal triumph in 1994 after he led the 49ers to victory against the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX . In the game, Young made one of the most dominant appearances in Super Bowl history. With the third play he threw a touchdown pass to Jerry Rice , a total of six touchdown passes , which was a new Super Bowl record. The previous record holder, with five touchdown passes, was Joe Montana. After the game, he was named a Super Bowl MVP .

Between 1992 and 1997, Young led the NFL in most of the relevant statistical categories, including five quarterback ratings at the end of the season . However, the 49ers, weakened by numerous departures, failed in the play-offs every time after their victory in the Super Bowl at the Green Bay Packers . It was only in the 1998 season that Young managed to win against Green Bay for the first time; eight seconds before the end of the game in the wildcard play-off game he threw a touchdown pass to Terrell Owens , who immediately - in reference to "The Catch", the touchdown pass from Joe Montana to Dwight Clark in the 1981 season - christened "The Catch II" has been. However, the 49ers, weakened by many injuries, were eliminated in the following game against the Atlanta Falcons . In the regular season , Young had set a new franchise record with the most yards thrown (4,170).

In the following season, Young was seriously injured in the third game against the Arizona Cardinals and from then on did not play a single game, but withdrew from active sport after the season. Mainly, Young retired due to a severe concussion from the Cardinals game - his fourth in three years and his second severe of the season. Young won 92 games as a starter for the 49ers and lost just 33, bringing him a total of 95 wins to 49 losses. His career quarterback rating was the highest in NFL history when he retired. Young is a member of the National Football League's 1990s All-Decade Team and received the Bert Bell Award twice . Young was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on February 5, 2005 and inducted into it on August 7 of the same year. He was the first left-handed quarterback to achieve this. Young is also considered one of the quarterbacks who were also good in the running game , which is why his coaches were urged for years to retrain him as running back . With his favorite wide receiver , Jerry Rice , he set numerous records; the number of 85 touchdown passes was only surpassed by Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison . His shirt number 8 is no longer assigned to the 49ers.

After his active career, Young worked as a football game analyst for TV station ESPN . Today he is co-founder and partner of the investment firm HGGC and on the board of directors of Serena Software .
