‹  Super Bowl XXIV Super Bowl XXVI  ›

The Super Bowl XXV was the 25th Super Bowl , the final game of the 1990 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 27, 1991, the Buffalo Bills and the New York Giants faced each other at Tampa Stadium in Tampa Bay , Florida . Winners were the New York Giants at a final score of 20:19, and Super Bowl MVP was running back the Giants, Ottis Anderson , selected.

background

Coach Bill Parcells' New York Giants had won the National Football Conference after a 15-13 over the San Francisco 49ers . The Giants were characterized by a hard defensive to the Pro Bowl - linebacker Pepper Johnson and Lawrence Taylor from which the enemy only 4,392 yards space gain and the fewest points in the NFL allowed (211). The offensive (335 points, NFL-wide 15th place), however, was considered mediocre, especially after starting quarterback Phil Simms injured himself and was replaced by his backup Jeff Hostetler . However, the attack of the Giants was also known to be able to drive long attack series through strong running game (" Smashmouth Offense "), and to give the opponent little chance of possession.

Coach Marv Levy's Buffalo Bills had won the American Football Conference 51-3 against the Los Angeles Raiders . The heart of the Bills was the "K-Gun" offensive (a form of the hurry-up offense in which the formation of a huddle is largely dispensed with) around quarterback Jim Kelly , tight end Keith McKeller (the namesake of the K-Gun), Running back Thurman Thomas and wide receiver Andre Reed , who scored 428 points (NFL-wide 1st place). Defensively, the Bills boasted the incumbent NFL Defensive Player of the Year , Defensive End Bruce Smith , who got 19 quarterback Sacks , and a tough linebacker corps with Darryl Talley , Shane Conlan , and Cornelius Bennett , who only allowed 263 points (NFL- far 6th place). In set pieces, Steve Tasker was considered one of the best special teams players in the league. Center Kent Hull , Kelly, Thomas, Reed, Smith, Talley, Conlan, Bennett and Tasker were all elected to the Pro Bowl .

To stop the "K-Gun" offensive, Bill Belichick , the Giants' Defensive Coordinator , designed a special defense strategy. Instead of the usual three or four men on the defensive line , four or three linebackers and four defensive backs , he let play with only two defensive linemen, four (sometimes only three) linebackers and five (sometimes even six) defensive backs to get through the numerical superiority in the secondary to prevent the passing game of the bills. With the 2: 4: 5- or 2: 3: 6 defensives, Belichick accepted that Buffalo's running game was made strong by the understaffed line . The Giants Defensive Backs should pull back a long way to avoid offering Kelly any deep throws and punish short throws with hard tackles.

Before the match, the Bills were the favorites: the bookmakers favored them by seven points.

Match report

After a cautious start, the Giants started one of their well-known long series of attacks, which kicker Matt Bahr completed after 6:15 minutes with a field goal to make it 3-0 for New York. The Bills struck back barely 90 seconds later with a field goal from kicker Scott Norwood (BUF 3 - NYG 3) and a little later took the lead through a long drive from quarterback Jim Kelly, which running back Don Smith completed for a touchdown (extra point Norwood, BUF 10 - NYG 3). The Bills increased to 12-3 when Bills defensive end Bruce Smith was able to tackle Giants quarterback Jeff Hostetler in the end zone for a safety , with the Giants narrowly escaping a defensive touchdown, as Hostetler could just hold onto the football. Hostetler returned the favor with a successful attack series, which he completed with his 14-yard throw at wide receiver Stephen Baker: After Bahr's extra point, it was 12-10 for Buffalo at halftime.

The Giants started the third quarter with one of the longest attack series in Super Bowl history (9:29 minutes), which running back Ottis Anderson ran into the end zone : after Matt Bahr's extra point it was 17-12 for New York. The Bills hit back with a touchdown run from Thurman Thomas (extra point Norwood, BUF 19 - NYG 17). The Giants drove one of their long drives again (7:32 minutes), which the Bills stopped three yards from the end zone: for example, kicker Matt Bahr New York shot back in front from close range at 20-19. With 2:16 minutes remaining, Bills quarterback Jim Kelly led Buffalo to the 29-yard line, so that eight seconds before the end of the game, kicker Scott Norwood tried a field goal from 47 yards. The shot went right and the Giants had won.

Giants running back Ottis Anderson (102 yards gain, one touchdown) was chosen for the Super Bowl MVP. It was noticeable that despite the close result, the Giants had more than twice as much possession of the ball than the Bills (40:33 minutes vs. 19:27 minutes).

consequences

Norwood's "Wide Right" missed shot is considered one of the most famous misses in NFL history and was ranked 41st in an ESPN "100 Greatest Sports Moments" poll. Norwood later commented, "I didn't turn my hips properly into the shot got, so he missed. "( " I wanted to hit the ball solid and I did ... I just didn't get my hips into it enough. " )

The little book in which Belichick outlined his defensive strategy is on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
